Diabetes drug Onglyza has heart side effectsA Kentucky woman has filed an Onglyza heart side effects lawsuit against Bristol-Myers Squibb and AstraZeneca claiming she suffered personal injuries as a result of being prescribed the type-2 diabetes drug, Onglyza.

Plaintiff Cathy N., a resident of Kentucky, has filed this Onglyza heart side effects lawsuit claiming that the drug she ingested to treat her type-2 diabetes was a “defective and unreasonably dangerous prescription drug.”

According to her Onglyza heart side effects lawsuit, Onglyza is prescribed to lower blood sugar levels of type-2 diabetes patients.  The drug was designed, tested, packaged, labeled, marketed, advertised, promoted, distributed and sold by the defendants in this Onglyza lawsuit.

Cathy says she took Onglyza to treat her diabetes from April 2014 to August 2016. She claims that, as a result of taking this medication, she “suffered significant bodily and mental injuries, pain and suffering, mental anguish, embarrassment, inconvenience, loss of earnings and earning capacity, and have and will incur past and future medical expenses.”

Her injuries, allegedly due to the medication, include heart failure, congestive heart failure, and a cardiovascular event.

Drug Risks

Cathy alleges that the drug manufacturers had knowledge that their drug was defective and could result in injury to patients. In fact, she claims AstraZeneca and Bristol-Myers Squibb “knowingly, purposely, and deliberately failed to adequately warn Plaintiff, patients, consumers, medical providers, and the public of the increased risk of serious injury” associated with the use of Onglyza.

Cathy believes the companies knew about possible Onglyza heart side effect risks including heart failure, congestive heart failure, cardiac failure, and death that could result from heart problems. She says that had she known about the Onglyza heart side effects dangers, she would have never agreed to take the drug.

Cathy further alleges her doctor also did not know about the Onglyza heart side effects risks, and therefore did not discuss these possibilities with her.

Because, according to her lawsuit, the drug manufacturers acted with “knowing, reckless, conscious, wanton, willful and deliberate disregard for the value of human life and the rights and safety of consumers,” she claims she should receive damages and recompense for the lost wages, mounting medical expenses and diminishment of earning potential she suffered as a result of her Onglyza heart side effects.

This Onglyza Heart Side Effects Lawsuit is Case No. 5:18-cv-00448-KKC in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.

Onglyza Heart Side Effects

Cathy is not the only patient to claim to have suffered Onglyza heart side effects. The SAVOR study in 2013 published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that among almost 17,000 patients who took incretin mimetics, there was an increase in hospitalizations due to heart conditions.

Onglyza is part of a drug class called incretin mimetics. These drugs stimulate the production of insulin in the pancreas so that blood sugar levels in type-2 diabetes patients will be better regulated.
