MGM cyberattack overview:

  • Who: MGM Resorts International has reportedly been affected by a “cybersecurity issue.”
  • Why: The MGM cyberattack reportedly caused outages in its ATMs, slot machines, websites and other systems.
  • Where: The MGM cyberattack affected its Las Vegas properties; other properties throughout the United States may also be affected.

MGM Resorts International says it experienced a “cybersecurity issue” beginning Sunday that affected ATMs, websites and other systems at its Las Vegas properties, TechCrunch reports.

The MGM cyberattack reportedly led to outages that affected slot machines and ATMs at its Las Vegas casinos. Restaurants on the premises were reportedly unable to process credit card transactions and only accepted cash.

MGM guests were also allegedly unable to use digital room keys to enter their hotel rooms.

MGM cyberattack affected all Las Vegas resorts; others may also be affected

MGM Resorts says the MGM cyberattack affected all of its Las Vegas resorts, including Aria, Bellagio, Luxor, MGM Grand and Mandalay Bay. Other MGM resorts outside of Las Vegas may have been affected. TechCrunch notes MGM Springfield in Massachusetts, MGM National Harbor and the Empire City Casino in New York were offline at the time of its report.

Further information about the MGM cyberattack was not immediately available. It is currently unclear if the hackers accessed data from MGM’s systems.

TechCrunch notes that an MGM spokesperson had not responded to questions, but it is possible employees may not currently have access to their email.

MGM says it launched an investigation and “took prompt action” to protect its data after it learned of the MGM cyberattack, according to BleepingComputer.

The MGM outage reportedly began the night of Sept. 10.

“Promptly after detecting the issue, we quickly began an investigation with assistance from leading external cybersecurity experts” and notified law enforcement about the MGM cyberattack, MGM tells BleepingComputer.

The MGM website was also down. As of this writing, the MGM Resorts home page directs consumers to call the resort for assistance.

BleepingComputer says the MGM Rewards app is also not working, but other MGM apps, such as MGM+ and the MGM Sportsbook, are currently functioning.

This MGM cyberattack is not the first to target the resort company. Last year, hackers reportedly stole the personal information of more than 140 million MGM guests and shared it on Telegram.

MGM was also affected by a 2019 data breach, which reportedly affected more than 10 million MGM guests. An affected guest filed a class action lawsuit alleging hackers accessed his personal data. That lawsuit was dismissed in August.
