- Where: The recall is active in the United States.
Land Rover is recalling more than 250,000 SUVs, including the Defender, Discovery and Range Rover models, due to a potential defect in the driver’s airbag system.
The recall, issued on June 12, affects certain models from the 2020 to 2026 production years. Specifically, it covers the 2020–2026 Defender, 2021–2026 Discovery and 2022–2026 Range Rover vehicles.
According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue stems from the clockspring connector in the airbag system, which may corrode over time. This corrosion can increase resistance in the airbag’s circuitry, potentially preventing it from deploying during a crash.
“An air bag that does not deploy as intended increases the risk of injury in a crash,” the Land Rover recall states.
Land Rover to apply lubrication fix free of charge
The recall notice highlights that an engineering analysis revealed the airbag warning lamp would illuminate 300 to 400 miles before the clockspring connector reaches a point where it could fail to deploy the airbag.
This early warning system gives drivers a chance to address the issue before it becomes critical.
Land Rover is taking proactive steps to address the issue, and vehicle owners will receive notification by mail starting Aug. 7, urging them to visit a dealership.
At the dealership, a protective lubricant will be applied to the connector terminals at no cost to the owner. This measure is also being incorporated into the production process to prevent future occurrences of the problem.
For more information, consumers can visit the NHTSA website to check if their vehicle is affected by this or any other Land Rover recall.
Owners can also contact Land Rover’s customer service at 800-637-6837, quoting recall number D120.
Land Rover says it has not received any reports of injuries related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
Last year, Jaguar Land Rover had to recall almost 21,000 Range Rover Evoque SUVs due to a defect in the passenger airbag that could pose a safety risk.
