Onglyza Kombiglyze XR heart failureReports say serious side effects and complications may result from patients taking Kombiglyze XR, a common type-2 diabetes drug.

Kombiglyze XR is part of an incretin mimetic drug family that functions by increasing the body’s level of insulin production in patients with type-2 diabetes. Incretin mimetics are a fairly new type of type-2 diabetes drug. Although new, they quickly became popular.

According to reports, these drugs signal the pancreas to create more insulin during the times that a patient eats. This, thereby, improves insulin balance.

The drug was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in November 2010. Since its introduction to the market, it has been prescribed to millions of patients with the type-2 diabetes.

According to aftermarket reports, Kombiglyze XR side effects have purportedly include heart failure and other heart complications, which could lead to death.

The primary ingredient in Kombiglyze XR is saxagliptin, and according to reports, this is precisely what is linking the drug to Kombiglyze XR side effects such as heart failure.

There are more common Kombiglyze XR side effects that are not as serious as heart failure. These side effects may include: diarrhea, gas, head pain, urinary tract infection, weight loss, excessive sweating, and indigestion.

However, after a recent study has indicated that the patients who are prescribed this medication face severe heart complications or heart failure, and even death, Kombiglyze XR side effects have spurred increased concern and attention in the medical community.

Danger from Kombiglyze XR Side Effects

A study conducted by Bristol-Myers Squibb and AstraZeneca, called the SAVOR study, was published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2013.

According to the report on the study, the analysis had included approximately 16,492 type-2 diabetes patients. The study was researching which medication was best for patients with type-2 diabetes. And, allegedly, it had concluded that Kombiglyze XR patients, along with patients taking Onglyza, another type-2 diabetes drug, were at a 27% increase for developing heart failure and becoming hospitalized as a result.

Such Kombiglyze XR side effects may cause serious adverse health effects and complications. And, moreover, although the results may not have been conclusive, the researchers did purport that much more research is needed to look into the increased risk and heart complications that may come about due to Kombiglyze XR side effects.

Additionally, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, had pushed Bristol-Myers Squibb and AstraZeneca to include heart failure on Onglyza’s warning label. The cases of heart or cardiac complications due to Kombiglyze XR side effects have caused pharmaceutical companies to take caution and to be aware of any more possible and impending incidences of Kombiglyze XR side effects.

Any patient who believes that they are victim for having suffered Kombiglyze XR side effects may want to consult with a well-informed products liability attorney.
