Hyundai recall overview:

  • Who: Hyundai Motor America is recalling 294,128 vehicles, including Hyundai Santa Fe and Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid models.
  • Why: The recall is due to a defect that may cause the driver and passenger seat belt anchors to detach.
  • Where: The recall is active in the United States.

Hyundai is recalling nearly 300,000 vehicles due to a potential defect in the seat belt anchors that could lead to detachment, posing a significant safety risk.

The recall, issued on April 6, affects 294,128 vehicles. The models involved include the 2023-2025 Hyundai Ioniq 6, 2023-2026 Genesis G90 and 2024-2026 Hyundai Santa Fe and Santa Fe Hybrid vehicles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) highlighted that a detached seat belt anchor could fail to restrain occupants properly, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.

“A detached seat belt anchor will not adequately restrain the seat occupant, increasing the risk of injury in a crash,” the Hyundai recall states.

Hyundai to offer free inspections and repairs, recall states

Hyundai is taking proactive measures to address the issue by offering free inspections and necessary repairs to affected vehicles. Consumers who own the affected models, including the Hyundai Santa Fe, are encouraged to contact Hyundai or Genesis customer service for further information and to schedule an inspection.

The company has emphasized that dealers will handle the inspection and reinforcement or replacement of the seat belt anchors as needed, ensuring that all repairs are conducted without charge to the owners.

“Dealers will inspect and reinforce or replace the seat belt anchors, as necessary, free of charge,” the recall notice says.

Owner notification letters are scheduled to be mailed by June 5. Hyundai has provided contact numbers for customer service inquiries: 1-855-371-9460 for Hyundai and 844-340-9741 for Genesis.

Hyundai reports that, to date, there have been no injuries or incidents linked to the seat belt anchor defect. The company is not currently facing any legal action related to this Hyundai recall, but such recalls are closely monitored as they can sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

However, Hyundai is currently facing a class action lawsuit alleging the company knowingly sold Tucson SUVs with defective automatic emergency braking systems.
