Tennessee Technical Coatings Corp. Hand Sanitizer Recall Overview:
- Who: Tennessee Technical Coatings Corp. is voluntarily recalling all lots of one of its hand sanitizers, the FDA says.
- Why: FDA analysis has found the product contains methanol, which can be deadly if accidentally ingested.
- Where: The recall is nationwide.
A hand sanitizer distributed nationwide is being recalled by the gallon after a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) analysis found it contains methanol.
Tennessee Technical Coatings Corp. announced March 7 on the FDA website that it is voluntarily recalling all lots of its Hand Sanitizer Isopropyl Alcohol Antiseptic 75% at the consumer level.
Substantial methanol exposure can result in nausea, vomiting, headaches, blurred vision, coma, seizures, permanent blindness, permanent damage to the central nervous system or even death.
The product is risky to use on the hands, but it is young children who accidentally ingest the products, and adolescents and adults who drink these products as an alcohol substitute, who are most at risk for methanol poisoning, the FDA said.
To date, Tennessee Technical Coatings Corp. said it has not received any reports of people injured due to the product.
The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

The hand sanitizer was distributed in Tennessee to retail customers and wholesale companies who further distributed it between April 2020 and August 2020.
Tennessee Technical Coatings said it is notifying its distributors and customers by letter and telephone and arranging for return of all recalled products.
Consumers who have used the product should “stop using, return to place of purchase and contact their doctor,” the recall notice says.
Meanwhile, consumers who used hand sanitizer to help ward off germs during the pandemic may have been exposed to benzene, a cancer-causing chemical.
Valisure, an independent analytical pharmacy, wrote a citizens petition to the FDA in March after it found benzene in hand sanitizers marketed and distributed by a number of companies.
The company has also found elevated levels of benzene in a number of aerosol products, including sunscreens, antiperspirants and anti fungal sprays.
