GM class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Plaintiff Jonathan Dixon filed a class action lawsuit against General Motors LLC.
  • Why: Dixon claims General Motors sold certain Chevrolet, GMC and Buick vehicles with an engine defect that causes coolant to leak.
  • Where: The GM class action lawsuit was filed in Georgia federal court.

A new class action lawsuit claims certain Chevrolet, GMC and Buick vehicles have an engine defect that causes coolant to leak — a defect General Motors knew about when leasing or selling the vehicles.

Plaintiff Jonathan Dixon filed the class action complaint against General Motors on June 26 in Georgia federal court, alleging violations of state and federal consumer laws.

According to the lawsuit, the engine defect causes coolant to leak from the radiator hose connections early within the warranty period and the vehicles’ useful life.

“Coolant loss leads to engine overheating, reduced engine power/limp mode events, sudden engine disablement and/or catastrophic engine damage,” the GM class action lawsuit says.

Dixon says he purchased a new 2024 Chevrolet Colorado in March 2024. In February 2026, he says his vehicle experienced the defect when the check engine light illuminated and the vehicle exhibited a metal-on-metal grinding noise at slow speed.

Dixon claims he paid $489.36 out of pocket for repairs because the defect was not covered by GM’s warranty.

Lawsuit claims GM knew about engine defect

Dixon alleges the vehicles are equipped with a closed, sealed liquid engine cooling system in which coolant is intended to circulate continuously between the engine and the radiator in a contained loop to regulate operating temperature and prevent overheating.

However, he claims the cooling system suffers from a design and/or manufacturing defect in the radiator hose quick-connect interface, causing coolant to leak from the radiator hose connections early within the warranty period and the vehicles’ useful life.

Dixon claims GM knew about the defect prior to the sale of the first class vehicle but did not warn consumers about it, nor has it provided an adequate remedy, rendering GM’s marketing of the vehicles false and misleading.

The class vehicles affected by the alleged defect include model years 2023–2026 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon equipped with the L3B 2.7L turbocharged four-cylinder engine, model years 2024–2026 Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia and model years 2025–2026 Buick Enclave equipped with the LK0 2.5L turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

Dixon is suing GM for allegedly failing to honor warranties, concealing known product defects and violating federal warranty law and Georgia consumer protection laws.

He seeks certification of the class action, damages, fees, costs and a jury trial.

In another GM lawsuit, three consumers allege GM sold Equinox, Terrain and Envision vehicles with a defective brake vacuum pump system and hid the defect, putting profits over safety.
