Match.com class action overview:

  • Who: Plaintiff Joseph Caetano is suing Match.com LLC.
  • Why: Caetano claims Match.com falsely advertises that its “Highlights” feature is included in its subscription packages
  • Where: The Match.com class action lawsuit was filed in New York federal court.

A new class action lawsuit claims Match.com falsely advertises that its “Highlights” feature is included in its subscription packages, when, in fact, it requires an additional paid add-on.

Plaintiff Joseph Caetano accuses Match.com of misleading consumers by advertising “Highlights” — a feature that showcases other members who are supposedly “most compatible” with a user — as part of its Match subscription packages.

However, Caetano says users can only connect with these “Highlights” by purchasing an additional paid add-on called “Super Likes.” The plaintiff claims this information is not disclosed to consumers until after they have already paid for a Match subscription.

“Only once consumers have paid for their Match subscription do they discover that they must pay an additional amount to obtain and send Super Likes to these Highlights,” the Match.com class action lawsuit says.

Caetano’s class action lawsuit alleges Match.com’s deceptive advertising practices violate New York’s General Business Law and constitute breach of contract and unjust enrichment.

Caetano wants to represent a nationwide class of consumers who paid for a Match subscription from June 2023 through the present as well as a New York subclass. He is seeking damages, restitution and injunctive relief on behalf of the proposed class.

Users misled into paying more for Match.com subscription benefits, class action claims

Caetano claims he signed up for a Match subscription in June 2026, believing he would be able to contact any other member at no additional cost beyond his Platinum membership. He says he was not aware that “Highlights” were placed behind a paywall until after he had already paid for the Match subscription.

The Match.com class action lawsuit also references a 2019 complaint filed by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) against Match.com’s parent company, which alleged the company used fake love interest advertisements to trick consumers into purchasing paid subscriptions.

Caetano alleges Match.com’s advertisements regarding “Highlights” could similarly include fake accounts to entice consumers into purchasing “Super Likes.”

The plaintiff claims Match.com’s deceptive advertising practices have caused significant harm to consumers, who have been misled into paying for a Match subscription under false pretenses.

In August 2025, the FTC reached a $14 million Match.com settlement to resolve allegations over deceptive advertising, billing and cancellation policies.

Earlier this year, a consumer filed a separate lawsuit against Match.com, alleging the dating app failed to provide users with timely and adequate notice of a data breach.
