Subaru is recalling more than half a million vehicles due to incorrect gross axle weight rating labels that could result in vehicle overloading.
The recall, announced on July 7, affects several models, including the 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid, 2025-2026 Forester Hybrid, Forester and 2019-2026 Ascent.
Subaru Ascent models are in the majority, numbering around 383,800.
These vehicles have been identified as having incorrect GAWR labels, which fail to meet the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 110 regarding tire selection and rims.
According to the Subaru recall, an incorrect GAWR label may lead to an overloaded vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Subaru to issue new certification labels at no cost
Subaru is taking proactive steps to address the issue by providing new certification labels to vehicle owners at no cost.
“The automaker will send new certification labels to owners, or dealers can install them for free,” the recall says.
Subaru plans to inform owners of the safety risk through mailings, with the first round of notifications scheduled for Aug. 25. A second mailing will follow once the remedy is available.

Subaru says it has not received any reports of injuries related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the Subaru recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
However, Subaru is facing a lawsuit involving Subaru Outback, Forester, Crosstrek and other models over claims that the vehicles have a defective electrical system that causes the battery to fail prematurely.
