Ferrero U.S.A is recalling two of its Kinder chocolate products just weeks before Easter after discovering the products may be contaminated with salmonella typhimurium.
The company announced the recall of its Kinder Happy Moments Chocolate Assortment and Kinder Mix Chocolate Treats basket Apr. 7 on the United States Food and Drug Administration website. It said the products were being recalled because they were manufactured in a facility where salmonella typhimurium was detected.
While there are no reports of illness in the United States to date, Ferrero said it is voluntarily recalling the products out of an abundance of caution due to reported cases of salmonella in consumers that consumed products in Europe that were manufactured at the same facility.
“Ferrero deeply regrets this situation,” it said. “We take food safety extremely seriously and every step we have taken has been guided by our commitment to consumer care. We will continue to work cooperatively with the Food and Drug Administration to address this matter.”
The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.
No other Kinder products in the U.S. market are currently included in the recall.
Consumers who bought the affected products should not eat them and can contact Ferrero for a full refund on 1-800-688-3552 or at the website.
Salmonella Dangerous for Kids, Elderly
Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems.
Healthy people infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
In rare circumstances, infection with salmonella can also cause more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.
Meanwhile, in the UK, Ferrero is recalling batches of its iconic Kinder Surprises just weeks before Easter in Britain as the chocolate eggs may contain salmonella.
“If you have bought one of the selected batches of Kinder Surprise as detailed above, do not eat it,” the company said but did not say if anyone had gotten sick from the contamination so far.
Last month, Ferrero U.S.A. was sued by consumers who alleged that Kinder Joy brand ‘Sweet Cream Topped With Cocoa Wafer Bites’ do not actually contain any sweet cream.
Plaintiff Jessica Sneed claimed in her class action lawsuit that Ferrero misleads consumers into believing the product contains sweet cream by misrepresenting its packaging.
