Bravo Packing Inc. has recalled all of its frozen pet food, including Performance Dog, and dog bone products nationwide after samples tested positive for Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes.
Both pets and humans exposed to the products may be at risk according to Food and Drug Administration’s expanded recall notice issued on March 16. The agency says the manufacturer, New Jersey-based Bravo Packing, expanded the recall due to concerns about cross-contamination.
The recalled frozen pet food includes:
- Performance Dog (chub) frozen raw dog food in 2 lbs. and 5 lbs. varieties
- Green Tripe” (chub – ground bovine stomach) frozen raw dog food in 2 lbs. and 5 lbs. varieties
- Beef (chub – ground) frozen raw dog food in 2 lbs. and 5 lbs. varieties
- Performance Dog (patties) frozen raw dog food
- Tripe (patties ¼ lbs.) frozen raw dog food
- Bones (smoked) in 14 varieties
“Consumers with any of the affected products should handle them with caution, discard products in a secure container, and wash hands and surfaces properly,” reads the FDA recall notice which also indicates that there have been no reported pet or consumer illnesses related to the pet food so far.
“Potential Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes” was cited as the reason for the recall.
Salmonella can cause illness in both pets and people, says the FDA. Pets who have eaten the recalled frozen pet food or bones should be monitored for illness, including fatigue, fever, and abdominal pain, and other possible stomach problems and fever, notes the FDA recall notice. In rare cases, it can cause infections in the heart muscle, arthritis, muscle pain, urinary tract issues, and eye problems.
The FDA warns that pets who have consumed the recalled frozen pet food may not show symptoms, but their saliva and/or feces can contain Salmonella. If a pet who has consumed Performance Dog food or other recalled items becomes ill, the FDA says that the owner should seek veterinary services.
It is also important for pet owners to exercise caution when handling the products, washing their hands if they come into contact with the recalled food or their pet’s saliva or feces.
Another human health risk, Listeria monocytogenes can cause fever, headaches, and stiff muscles in healthy adults. It can lead to serious and even fatal problems in young children, infants, and the elderly warns the FDA. Listeria monocytogenes infections can also cause miscarriage or stillbirth in pregnant people.
