Whole Foods Dal Listeria Recall Overview:
- Who: Bakkavor USA has announced a voluntary recall of Whole Foods Market Red Lentil Dal.
- Why: The dal has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
- Where: The product was distributed in 49 states across the nation.
A Whole Foods Market red lentil dal is being recalled as it may be contaminated with listeria.
The recall notice was posted to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration website Apr. 21 and applies to certain lots of Whole Foods Market Red Lentil Dal in 12 oz. plastic trays.
The dal may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, the recall notice says, an organism that can cause “serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems.”
Although healthy people may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women, the recall says.
No illnesses have been reported to date, the company said, and the company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.
Whole Foods Dal Recall Prompted by Pickled Cauliflower
The product is produced by Bakkavor USA of Charlotte, North Carolina, for Whole Foods Market. It also contains Pickled Curry Cauliflower, an ingredient produced by Doux South Specialties, LLC. Bakkavor initiated the dal recall after Doux South Specialities said it was recalling its Pickled Curry Cauliflower on Apr. 19.
“Bakkavor USA immediately ceased the production and distribution of the Whole Foods Market Red Lentil Dal containing the Pickled Curry Cauliflower,” the recall states. “The FDA and Doux South Specialties, LLC are continuing their investigation as to what caused the problem.”
The affected product has the UPC 1 95515 02394 8 with the following codes: USE BY 4/15/2022, USE BY 4/17/2022, USE BY 4/18/2022, USE BY 4/19/2022, USE BY 4/22/2022, USE BY 4/24/2022, USE BY 4/25/2022 and USE BY 4/26/2022.
It was distributed to Whole Foods Market stores in Alaska, Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, West Virginia and Wyoming.
Customers who purchased the product at Whole Foods Market can take a valid receipt into the store for a full refund.
The news comes after certain bottles of Whole Foods Market 365 Organic Creamy Caesar Dressing were recalled Apr. 7 as they may contain undeclared soy and wheat, which could be life-threatening for those with allergies.
