  • Why: The plaintiff claims Abbott’s glucose monitor is defective and can give incorrect readings.
  • Where: The Abbott glucose monitor class action lawsuit was filed in Louisiana federal court.

A new class action lawsuit alleges Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre 2 glucose monitor is defective and can give incorrect readings leading to life-threatening consequences.

Plaintiff Sheila Connoly filed the class action complaint against Abbott Diabetes Care and Abbott Laboratories on April 21 in Louisiana federal court, alleging violations of state and federal consumer laws.

According to the lawsuit, Abbott is responsible for manufacturing the FreeStyle Libre 2 and FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs), which are designed to help individuals with diabetes monitor their blood glucose levels.

Connoly claims that the devices are defective due to a design and/or manufacturing flaw that causes the sensor to falsely report low glucose readings, even when users’ actual blood glucose levels are normal or elevated.

Connoly, who is a Type 1 diabetic, says she used the FreeStyle Libre 2 CGM to monitor her blood glucose levels. On Dec. 15, 2025, Connoly says she checked her blood sugar with the device and received a high reading of 190 mg/dl. She administered two units of insulin, and her blood sugar reading returned to a normal level, the lawsuit says.

However, the following morning, Connoly began feeling ill and went to the hospital, where she received a normal blood sugar reading of 167 mg/dl from her CGM, the lawsuit alleges.

Despite the normal reading, her condition continued to decline, and the hospital diagnosed her with diabetic ketoacidosis, a life-threatening condition, with a blood sugar reading of approximately 700 mg/dl.

Class action: FreeStyle Libre 2 glucose monitor nearly killed plaintiff

Connoly claims that her CGM gave her a faulty “normal” blood sugar reading when she was in diabetic ketoacidosis, nearly costing her her life.

She says she relied on the device to make life-or-death treatment decisions regarding insulin administration and carbohydrate intake.

The inaccurate readings, she claims, prompted her to take unnecessary corrective action and delay appropriate treatment, putting her into diabetic ketoacidosis and almost resulting in her death.

Connoly alleges that Abbott is liable for the damages she sustained due to the defective product, including past, present, and future medical expenses, physical and mental pain and suffering, past lost wages, and loss of enjoyment of life.

She is looking to represent anyone who used the FreeStyle Libre 2 or FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus CGMs in this Libre class action lawsuit. Connoly is suing for damages and is demanding a jury trial.

On Dec. 3, 2025, Abbott issued a recall for its FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus Sensor Kits also due to concerns about inaccurate low glucose readings. In February 2026, Abbott was hit with a lawsuit alleging it sold the sensors without disclosing the defect and only initiated the recall after hundreds of serious injuries and seven deaths were reported.
