World Variety Produce Salmonella Organic Zucchini Recall Overview:

  • Who: World Variety Produce is voluntarily recalling one lot of organic zucchini.
  • Why: The zucchini has the potential to be contaminated with salmonella, the company says.
  • Where: The product was distributed through select Walmart stores in 18 different states.

Organic zucchini sold at Walmarts in 18 states are being recalled as the products may be contaminated with salmonella.

In a recall notice posted Apr. 18 on the U.S. Food & Drug Administration website, World Variety Produce, Inc. of Los Angeles, California, said it was voluntarily recalling case lot #38706503 of organic zucchini.

The product is being recalled because it has the potential to be contaminated with salmonella, the recall states.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems.

The recall was initiated because a single lot of imported organic zucchini tested positive for salmonella as a result of a routine FDA sampling, the company said.

No illnesses have been reported to date; however, consumers who have purchased the recalled product are urged to “destroy and dispose of” it.

The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

The product is sold under the Organic Marketside brand in a clear overwrap tray.

Organic Zucchini Distributed in 18 States, According to Recall

The affected product was distributed through select Walmart retail stores in Arizona, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas and Wisconsin.

Healthy persons infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

In rare circumstances, infection with salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.

Meanwhile, Ferrero U.S.A is recalling two of its Kinder chocolate products just weeks before Easter after discovering the products may be contaminated with salmonella.
