Ghirardelli Chocolate Company is recalling its powdered beverage mixes due to potential Salmonella contamination. The recall affects a variety of products distributed across the United States.
The recall was announced on April 27 and subsequently published by the FDA on April 28.
It involves several types of powdered beverage mixes, including chocolate and white chocolate flavored frappes, hot cocoa pouches and sweet ground powders. These products are primarily packaged for food service and institutional customers but may also be available to consumers through online platforms.
The contamination risk stems from milk powder supplied by California Dairies Inc., which was used as an ingredient in these mixes.
“Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections,” the recall notice says.
No illnesses reported so far related to Ghirardelli drink mix, recall says
The Ghirardelli recall notice emphasizes that no illnesses have been reported so far, but the potential health risks associated with Salmonella are significant.
Symptoms of Salmonella infection include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In severe cases, the infection can lead to more serious conditions, such as arterial infections and endocarditis.
“Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain,” the recall says.
Ghirardelli is taking proactive measures to address the issue by recalling all affected products. Consumers who have purchased these products are advised to discontinue use immediately and contact Ghirardelli for more information.
The company has provided a dedicated phone line for inquiries, available 24/7, to assist consumers with any questions or concerns they may have.
Consumers seeking more information about the recall can contact Ghirardelli Chocolate Company directly at 1-844-776-0419, available seven days a week, 24 hours a day.
Ghirardelli says it has not received any reports of illness related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
Earlier this year, Superfoods recalled its Live It Up Super Greens dietary supplement powders following a Salmonella outbreak that has sickened 45 people across 21 states.
