General Motors GMC Terrain Headlamp Glare Recall Overview:

  • Who: General Motors has initiated a recall for more than 740,000 model year 2010-2017 GMC Terrain vehicles.
  • Why: GM is initiating the recall over an issue with glare caused by the housing for the vehicles lower head lamps.
  • Where: The recall is nationwide.

General Motors has announced it is recalling more than 740,000 of its model year 2010-2017 GMC Terrain vehicles due to a potential headlight glare issue.

The recall was initiated over concerns that glare from headlights on the 2010-2017 GMC Terrain vehicles could impact other drivers on the road, according to a safety recall report published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Mar. 18.

GM estimates that every GMC Terrain from between 2010-2017 is affected but notes that Terrain vehicles manufactured after 2017 have a different headlight design and are subsequently not included in the recall.

The glare issue revolves around the headlamp housing for the lower headlights on the GMC Terrain vehicles, according to the recall.

GM says the glare, caused by a reflection off the headlamp housing, emits a light that is more powerful than allowed.

“These reflections may cause glare or be distracting to other drivers, increasing the risk of a crash,” the recall states.

GM Says Glare Caused By Reflection Off Headlamp Housing

The reflection is due to a defect in the design of the headlamp housing, which causes light from the lower beam lamp to “reflect off of the inner surface of the high beam reflector,” according to the recall.

GM says the high beam lamps are not affected.

The auto manufacturer had previously petitioned the NHTSA in 2019 to not have to conduct a recall; however, the agency denied the auto manufacturer’s request this month.

“On Mar. 3, 2022, GM’s SFADA reviewed NHTSA’s denial and decided to conduct a noncompliance recall of the affected vehicles,” the recall states.

GM had argued that the headlamp issue was “inconsequential,” Reuters reports.

A remedy has not yet been determined to fix the issue, according to GM, which says it will ultimately reimburse vehicle owners for repairs.

GM began notifying dealers about the recall on Mar. 8 and the company estimates it will begin notifying drivers on Apr. 23, according to the recall.

The company initiated a similar recall this month for 10 of its GMC Hummer EV vehicles due to concerns their rear headlamps were installed with defective software that could cause them to stop working or permanently remain on.

Gmc sierra 1500 headlights are awful. They blind other drivers on dim. I don’t see how they haven’t recalled them yet, and the transmissions. Bought in 2016 and must buy a new transmission now. Just went out, lucky I was in my own driveway. Death rattle or death shake, get up in high speed on the interstate it will rattle you to death. Changed out tires and leaf springs thinking that might help, nope. It is about the worst truck I have ever bought. Few more months I’ll have a worthless paid off completely truck just sitting in my yard. I won’t buy another one from gmc.

Thank you for information!!I was wanting one of those trucks. You surely save me the grief!!!
