Van Leeuwen recalled more than 4,000 pints of Brown Sugar Chunk ice cream as it may contain undeclared walnuts.

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) website published the recall May 23. It applies to 4,096 frozen 14-oz. pints of Van Leeuwen Brown Sugar Chunk French Ice Cream products.

Van Leeuwen recalled the product because it contains an undeclared allergen: walnuts.

“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to walnuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products,” the recall notice says.

The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

Customer complaint led to Van Leeuwen ice cream recall

Van Leeuwen distributed the recalled products in retail stores.

The ice cream comes in a 14-oz. reddish-brown package with black lettering on the cup and lid and is marked with Lot No. 23P102 and best-by date of April 12, 2025 on the bottom of the pint.

Van Leeuwen voluntarily initiated the recall after a customer complaint led to the discovery that the ice cream contained walnuts, but was distributed in packaging that did not declare the presence of walnuts. The cause of the product labeling error is being investigated, the company says.

Consumers who have purchased the impacted ice cream should return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

In May of last year, Van Leeuwen voluntarily recalled 2,185 14-oz. pints of its non-dairy frozen dessert Oat Milk Brown Sugar Chunk because it may contain traces of undeclared tree nuts.
