Mortadella deli meat recall affects 15,165 pounds of products due to allergen risk

Sofina Foods has initiated a recall of more than 7 tons of ready-to-eat mortadella deli meat, as it may contain undeclared pistachio, a potential allergen for some people.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) website published the recall May 19. It applies to approximately 15,165 pounds of ready-to-eat mortadella deli meat products sold under the Mastro brand.

The affected ready-to-eat mortadella deli meat products were produced March 27, March 30 and April 4. Consumers can view the specific recalled products on the recall notice.  

Canadian company Sofina Foods recalled the products due to misbranding and an undeclared allergen, the FSIS says. 

“The product may contain pistachio (tree nuts), a known allergen, which is not declared on the product label,” the mortadella recall states.

Sofina told FSIS a customer discovered the problem when they saw a pistachio nut in the ready-to-eat regular mortadella deli meat product during slicing. There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of the meats so far, the company says. 

Sofina is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Throw away or return mortadella deli meat, recall says

Sofina Foods shipped the recalled items to distribution centers in California, Illinois, Michigan, New York and Pennsylvania for use in retail delis and foodservice locations.

The FSIS is concerned some products may be in delis and foodservice locations’ refrigerators and freezers, the notice says. 

“Delis and foodservice locations are urged not to serve these products,” the mortadella deli meat recall states. “Consumers who have purchased these products and have an allergy to pistachios should not consume them.” 

The FSIS says consumers should throw the products away or return them to the place of purchase.

Kroger revealed in its 2023 Food Trends Report it expects the growing consumer trend of cooking at home to continue this year. 

Kroger says consumers who cook at home are looking to make up for lost time during the pandemic by “entertaining and cooking at home together with their family and friends,” according to a news release.
