Highlander recall overview:

  • Who: Toyota issued a voluntary recall for 751,000 of its Highlander and Highlander Hybrid vehicles.
  • Why: The mounting tabs for the front lower bumper may break if there is a minor impact on the front lower bumper cover that causes it to detach from the vehicle.
  • Where: The Toyota recall is effective across the United States.

Toyota issued a voluntary recall for 751,000 of its Highlander and Highlander Hybrid vehicles because of a fault in the front lower bumper mounting tabs that can cause the bumper to fall off after a minor impact.

The mounting tabs may detach after minor impact, leading to a crash hazard, the recall says.

Toyota says technicians will inspect vehicles to see if the tabs and slots for the front bumper cover have any damage.

If no damage is found, technicians will add retention hardware with improved design and replace the lower/upper bumper cover. If damage is found, technicians will install new hardware, according to the Toyota recall. All repairs are free of charge.

Toyota to inform customers of Highlander recall before late December, recall says

Toyota did not indicate it received any reports of injury related to the recall. The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Customers can reach the Toyota Brand Engagement Center at (800) 331-4331. The company says it will inform owners of the impacted vehicles about the recall before late December.

Toyota announced another recall in July for more than 110,000 Corolla, Highlander, Tacoma and Lexus vehicles as the airbags can deactivate, preventing them from deploying in a crash.

  1. Trisha Sorrells Doyle says:

My front bumper fell off driving on the NJ turnpike in the summer of 2022. Luckily, we weren’t hurt, but it was really scary. Now Toyota is making me jump thru MANY hoops and doesn’t seem to want to pay for my repairs. The local Toyota dealership wouldn’t help after it happened, so I took to another auto body shop. I have given Toyota pictures, my statement, receipt, and statement from the repair shop saying they repaired it. Got another response from them AGAIN saying they need more info. I could have died or killed my niece and young son in their car and they are fighting me over reimbursement!

The recall has impacted my ability to generate income because Turo delisted my 2022 Highlander hybrid (rightfully so). Despite the toyota connect app telling me to contact the dealer about the recall/repair- My local toyota dealer has no updates and said, “I read the email you sent us regarding returning the vehicle due to the open recall it has. I just wanted to reach out to you to provide you with a phone number to Toyota Customer Care Center. You can contact them for more information regarding the recall availability date and see what options you may have in the meantime. they can be reached at 800-331-4331. Please let me know if you need further assistance.” Real helpful (not!).
