Ford Motor Company issued a recall for 34,762 of its model year 2021-2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles over concerns a battery part could overheat, leading to a loss of power and increasing the risk of a crash.

The automaker says it is concerned direct current fast charging and repeated wide open pedal events could cause the high voltage battery main contactors to overheat in vehicles equipped with an extended range battery, according to the recall

“An overheated contactor that is prevented from properly closing while driving can result in a loss of motive power, which can increase the risk of a crash,” the Ford recall states.

Ford says it will direct vehicle owners to take the recalled Mustang Mach-E vehicles to either a Ford or Lincoln dealer to complete a free replacement of the affected battery part.

Ford expects to notify Mustang Mach-E vehicle owners beginning Oct. 30

Ford expects to mail recall notification letters to vehicle owners beginning Oct. 30 and ending Nov. 10, according to the recall.

The automaker says it previously provided vehicle owners with a general reimbursement plan for the cost of remedies paid out of pocket prior to notification of a safety recall in May 2023.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation into a separate  Ford recall in August in an effort to determine whether the 2022 recall of nearly 49,000 Mustang Mach-E electric vehicles adequately addressed concerns
