Kia initiates recall for Borrego due to headliner plate defect

Kia Borrego recall overview: 

• Who: Kia America has recalled 22,768 of its model year 2009-2014 Kia Borrego vehicles.
• Why: The recall was initiated over concerns the Kia Borrego vehicles’ headliner plates were not properly adhesives to their headliner, allowing them to potentially detach upon deployment of side curtain airbags, increasing the risk of an injury. 
• Where: The recall impacts owners of the recalled Kia Borrego vehicles nationwide. 

Kia America has recalled more than 22,000 of its model year 2009 through 2014 Kia Borrego vehicles over concerns their headliner plates could detach from the headliner, increasing the risk of an injury. 

The recall involves all 2009 model year Kia Borrego vehicles that were manufactured between May 2, 2008 and Jan. 20, 2009, and all 68 2010-2014 Kia Borrego vehicles manufactured from Oct. 20, 2009 through May 14, 2013 that were sold in the US. 

Kia said it is concerned that insufficient adhesive may have been applied to secure the headliner plates in the recalled Kia Borrego vehicles, potentially causing them to detach upon deployment of their side curtain airbags. 

“If the headliner plate(s) become detached upon deployment of the side curtain airbags, an occupant may be injured,” the Kia Borrego recall states. 

Kia instructs dealers to add industrial strength adhesive tape to headliner plates in recalled Kia Borrego vehicles

Kia said it has instructed its dealers to add industrial strength adhesive tape to the headliner plates in the recalled Kia Borrego vehicles so that they will be more secured to the headliner. 

The automaker will contact impacted vehicle owners by first class mail with instructions to bring their vehicles to a Kia dealer, with notification set to begin and end on Nov. 30, according to the Kia Borrego recall. 

Kia and Hyundai Motor America recalled more than 3 million vehicles combined last month over concerns they could experience a fire in their engine compartment.
