Honda HR-V windshield class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: A group of vehicle owners filed a class action lawsuit against American Honda Motor Co.
  • Why: The vehicle owners claim Honda manufactured and sold model year 2023 Honda HR-V vehicles equipped with defective rear windshields that are prone to shattering.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in Pennsylvania federal court.

American Honda Motor Co. manufactured and sold model year 2023 Honda HR-V vehicles containing defective rear windshields that are prone to shattering, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

A group of vehicle owners claim the rear windshields in the 2023 Honda HR-V vehicles were either made with deficient materials and/or deemed defective by a deficiency in the structure of the vehicles themselves.

Vehicle owners argue that the alleged defective nature of their rear windshields can cause them to shatter “for no reason at all,” including when they are parked.

“The shattering is so powerful that startled drivers have compared it to the loud popping noise, followed by a rain of glass falling on the occupants of the vehicle, sometimes while driving at highway speeds,” the Honda class action states.

The group of vehicle owners want to represent nationwide, California, Georgia, Pennsylvania, New York and Massachusetts classes of all persons or entities who purchased or leased any model year 2023 Honda HR-V vehicle.

Honda refuses to repair or replace allegedly defective rear windshields, class action says

Vehicle owners argue Honda refuses to repair or replace the rear windshields in the model year 2023 Honda HR-V vehicles under warranty, “requiring that Class Vehicle owners pay hundreds or thousands of dollars to repair the Defect.”

“Plaintiffs have each given Honda a reasonable opportunity to cure the Rear Windshield Defect, but Honda has refused to cure the defect or otherwise has been unable to do so within a reasonable time,” the Honda class action states.

Vehicle owners claim Honda is guilty of unjust enrichment and of violating the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act and a variety of state laws.

The plaintiffs are demanding a jury trial and requesting declaratory and injunctive relief along with an award of actual, incidental, consequential and punitive damages for themselves and all class members.

Honda was in the headlines earlier this year over a variety of recalls and proposed class action lawsuits involving the company

This just happened to me as well, on May 7, 2024. I called my Honda dealer and they claim to know nothing about it. I even called the corporate number for Honda and spoke with someone, they have no knowledge of this even being a problem, despite there being a lawsuit. I literally have security video of my back glass shattering for no reason at all and no one can help me.

This has happened to me too! My rear windshield completely popped while it was PARKED. Honda has been DRAGGING their feet since January about fixing this and allegedly the rear window is on back order until April which is ridiculous because I can schedule an appointment to get it fixed with Safelite next week. I’ve already received a ticket for lack of window by the Police and I am just to the point of spending the money to get it fixed myself, which shouldn’t have to happen considering it’s a DEFECT on the car itself.

This happened to me on May 26th 2023. Early in the morning when I was putting in gas. I heard a loud popping sound and shattered glass falling. I was shocked and confused and what happened. There was no one around and I couldn’t find anything that would have caused the damage. I had to pay out of pocket to have my rear windshield fixed. Knowing now this has not only happened to me but many others it makes me feel annoyed. Honda should have covered this defect of theirs. This was really finically stressful for me and I can imagine I’m not the only one who felt that way. I hope Honda takes responsibility and makes this right.

After filling my 2023 Honda HRV with gas, on February 3, 2024, I went shopping. As I drove through the parking lot looking for a parking space, I heard a loud noise. I thought I ran over something. I parked my car and as I was gathering my purse I looked at my rear window and it was shattered! I was only minutes away from the dealership, which I called immediately, and was told to bring my car in. I was told by several people working in the servicd area, they had no idea what happened and would let me know when they found out. A week later they still have no idea what happened, and the “part” they need is back ordered (now I know why), and I will get my car back around mid March.

Tuesday, February 6, 2024, my Honda HRV was sitting in my garage for about 3 minutes after getting back from church when we heard a loud boom . We went in garage and saw our back window shattered and cracked! It looks like it blew up from the inside! I don’t feel safe in this car now. Even if I get it fixed, I’m scared to ride in it.

  6. Debbie wolford Wolford says:

My 2023 hr. Back windshield exploded in parking lot while was at work. I thought someone hit it with something. Cost me 900.00 to replace it. I had a 1000.00 deductable on my insurance.

  7. Josie Gonzalez says:

On January 20 while driving after visiting the service department regarding a seatbelt recall. It was raining and my husband turned on the defroster and then the load boom I thought we got shot at. I immediately called 911. Long story short my car has been sitting in Honda Scott Robinson service waiting on repairs very disappointed with HONDA. FIX MY BACK WINDOW

  8. Adriane Hartill says:

While sitting in the parking lot talking with my daughter before existing the car, we suddenly heard a loud bang. When we turned around the back window had completely shattered. We got out and looked around we thought something hit the window but we didn’t see anything. We were confused and shaken to say the least. This was unexplainable and completely unacceptable on Honda’s part. This is not the first Honda I have owned and I am very disappointed with what has happened and the fact that Honda will not do anything to make it right is very disappointing.

  9. Candy Glidden says:

August 21, 2023, I dropped my son off at school and stopped to get gas. After I pumped my gad, I get back into my car, start it out and there was a loud explosion where I honestly thought someone shot at me. In a panick, I dropped my head, not knowing what was happening. Slowly I raise my head to look around and when I glanced to my back window it was literally spider webbing. I got out to look be cause I thought someone either shot at my car or threw something. There was nothing in sight. I realized then that my window had actually blown out from the sides and glass was everywhere. When I called Honda about the issue, because I did research before I called and found that numerous complaints about this happening were online. I told my company that I purchased the vehicle from, paying cash up front when purchased, that this seemed to be an issue with this vehicle. The lady laughed and said no its not, this problem is with the 2023 Honda pilot. I told her she was wrong. Also when I purchased the vehicle, I paid an extra 2500.00 to have all kinds of coverages from Honda directly. They told me this is not covered. So I paid out of pocket almost 600.00 to get a new window installed. And this was my only vehicle at the time and it took me a week to get a new window because everyone near me was booked solid.

  10. Scott Perrigo says:

This happened to me on January 3 2024 . It shattered in my Inside parking garage at my job
I filed A police report thinking someone broke into my car but nothing was missing.

The glass tech who replaced my window mentioned to me that this is a problem with my model and year I Google it and sure enough he was right.
