Kia, Volkswagen, Vi-Jon, Lyons Magnus recalls overview:

  • Who: Kia, Volkswagen, Vi-Jon and Lyons Magnus all faced recalls for their respective products this week.
  • Why: These top recalls revolve around product safety and possible risk of harm.
  • Where: The recalls are effective nationwide.

A number of popular companies, retailers and manufacturers announced top recalls this week for products that may pose potential injury to consumers.

Kia recalls 2012-2013 Optima vehicles

On Aug. 1, Kia posted a recall on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website for 257,998 of its 2012 and 2013 model year Optima sedans.

Kia launched an investigation into the issue in early May after a consumer filed a product liability lawsuit alleging they had been injured during an airbag deployment. The recall states that because the right and left headliner plates in the vehicles’ ceilings may not be secured properly, the plates may detach in the event of a side curtain airbag deployment. This can result in an occupant being struck by the plate, which allegedly occurred in the lawsuit.

The Kia recall encourages Optima owners to take their vehicles to a dealer who will put industrial-grade tape over the plates to secure them.

Kia also faces a class action lawsuit filed by Ann Brady and Leah Price in Iowa federal court. Brady and Price argue Kia did not follow regulations set by the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards when manufacturing vehicles without engine immobilizers between 2011 and 2021.

The pair claim affected Hyundai and Kia vehicles can continue to be steered and moved forward even without a key in the ignition, making them more prone to auto theft.

Three Volkswagen recalls affect 46,000 vehicles

Another recent top recall involves Volkswagen. In late July, Volkswagen announced three recalls for various vehicles.

In the first recall, 1,216 vehicles had faulty airbags that could explode. The affected vehicles contained air bag inflators manufactured by the company ARC, which have been linked to injuries and even one fatality in other auto brands, according to the Volkswagen recall.

The second recall affects 43,091 vehicles that may have a faulty rearview camera that does not display due to a manufacturing error in the infotainment system. A rearview camera that does not display an image reduces the driver’s view and can increase the risk of a crash, the recall states.

Lastly, a third recall from Volkswagen affects 2,238 vehicles that may be prone to a sunroof malfunction. The touch switch for the sunroof on the vehicles may be too sensitive, allowing for it to be inadvertently pressed, the recall states. An unintended auto-closure of the sunroof could increase risk of injury.

Volkswagen encourages consumers to take their affected vehicles to a dealership where the company will update software and replace faulty parks.

Vi-Jon laxative recall expanded internationally

Vi-Jon’s nationwide recall of more than 55 laxatives sold under brand names at major pharmacies has now been expanded a third time, this time internationally. The recall now includes 58 laxative products sold under various brands in cherry, lemon and grape flavors. Check here for the latest list of recalled products.

The affected products were found to contain the bacteria gluconacetobacter liquefaciens, which can increase the risk of invasive infections for immunocompromised people that could lead to serious, life-threatening adverse health consequences, the recall states.

Vi-Jon continues to notify its customers by phone and email and arrange for the return or destruction of all recalled products. It encourages consumers to stop using the recalled product and return it to the place of purchase.

Lyons Magnus expands recall of nutritional and beverage products

Rounding out our list of top recalls is Lyons Magnus, which announced it expanded its recall of 53 products by more than 100 additional product codes. The expanded recall now includes additional brands such as Organic Valley, Cafe Grumpy, Tone It Up, Uproot and Sated. The initial recall also included popular products made under the Oatly, Stumptown and Pirq brands, including Premier Protein.

The recall was prompted by a potential for microbial contamination, including from the organisms cronobacter sakazakii and clostridium botulinum, which can cause severe food poisoning, the recall notice states.

Lyons Magnus warns consumers to avoid consuming any of the recalled beverages even if they do not look or smell spoiled.
