Insight Pharmaceuticals has announced a recall of two lots of its Ting 1% Tolnaftate Athlete’s Foot Spray Antifungal Spray Liquid after it tested positive for benzene, a cancer-causing chemical.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Ting recall says that while benzene is not an ingredient in any of the company’s antifungal spray products, the unexpected benzene levels come from the propellant in the spray can.
The National Drug Code for the product is 63736-819-05; the recall affects lot code 0H50545 with an expiration date of 07/24 and lot code 1G50645 with an expiration date of 06/25.
Benzene is a human carcinogen that can cause leukemia, blood cancer and other cancers, as well as potentially life-threatening blood disorders, the recall says. Exposure can occur orally, through inhalation and through the skin.
Although humans regularly come into contact with benzene in the environment, both indoors and outside, elevated levels of the chemical are a risk, the recall says.
No adverse effects reported from benzene in spray, Ting recall says
Insight Pharmaceuticals says it has not received any reports of adverse effects related to the recall so far. The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
Insight has asked customers to stop using the impacted lots of spray immediately. Consumers can contact the company for a refund on its website, by email at medicalaffairs@prestigebrands.com or by phone at 800-344-7239 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 Eastern, Monday through Friday. Customers must provide a picture of the bottom of any cans they purchased, including an affected lot number, in order to receive a full refund.
In a separate Ting benzene recall, Insight also recalled two lots of Ting 2% Miconazole Nitrate Athlete’s Foot Spray Antifungal SprayPowder in December after a third-party lab found samples containing elevated levels of the carcinogen.
