The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that Step2 has recalled its Little Helper’s Shopping Cart over concerns that the basket on the shopping cart toy can break into sharp pieces, posing a laceration hazard.

Consumers who purchased the product are advised to immediately take the toy away from their children, and contact Step2 for a replacement shopping cart or a $40 Step2 credit that can be used on a future purchase.

The CPSC reports that the recall was initiated on Feb. 27, 2020, after Step2 received 22 reports of the baskets on the shopping carts breaking. No injuries have been reported in connection with the toy. Customers are invited to report incidents regarding the Step2 Little Helper’s Shopping Cart to the CPSC.

The CPSC describes the Step2 Little Helper’s Shopping Carts as measuring 18.5 inches by 13 inches by 21.5 inches. The shopping carts are composed of a cart base and a basket. They have four wheels and a basket. The toy was available in multiple colors, including blue and gray, pink and white, and pink and gray.

Recalled carts are those with date code combinations of 5 and 19. These date codes are located on the back of the shopping basket, on a rib at the center of the basket located below the handle. The model number can be found on the Little Helper’s packaging.

The Step2 Little Helper’s Shopping Carts were manufactured in the United States by The Step2 Company LLC of Streetsboro, Ohio. They were sold around the country both online on Step2.com’s website as well as in-store at Kohl’s, BJ Wholesale Club, and other stores. The toys were on the market between May 2019 and October 2019 and were sold for around $40.

The recall number for the Step2 Little Helper’s Shopping Cart is 20-081.

Consumers who purchased the product can contact Step2 for their recall either by phone or online. The phone number is 800-346-8372, and customer service is available between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday. The company’s information can also be found on their website, where any customer who would like more information on the recall can click on Services & Recall, then on Product Recalls, located at the top of the page.

The recall was implemented in conjunction with Canada, to best protect customers in both countries. The CPSC notes that around 17,000 units were sold in the United Sates, and around 3,500 units were sold in Canada.

Unfortunately, the Step2 Little Helper’s Shopping Cart is not the only children’s toy that has been recalled recently. In December, the CPSC reported that Toysmith recalled its Light-Up Magic Wand over concerns that the wand’s battery pack and cover could detach from the toy and pose a choking hazard.
