Dodge Charger recall overview:

  • Who: Chrysler parent companies Stellantis and FCA US are recalling nearly 285,000 2018-2021 Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 vehicles.
  • Why: The side air bag inflator on the vehicles can rupture, causing the air bags to not inflate.
  • Where: The air bag recall is effective across the United States.

Chrysler is issuing an air bag recall for 285,000 2018-2021 Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 vehicles.

FCA US and Stellantis issued the Dodge Charger recall for 217,802 Chargers produced between July 5, 2018, and May 20, 2021. The Chrysler 300 recall includes 67,180 vehicles produced between July 5, 2018, and May 19, 2021.

The recall was issued because the inflator for the vehicles’ side air bag inflatable curtain may rupture, preventing air bag inflation.

The rupture may result in compressed gas rapidly escaping from the inflator and material potentially being propelled into the vehicle, the air bag recall says.

Moisture could have been introduced to the inflator during manufacturing, which led to internal corrosion and the inflator rupture.

The automaker stopped using the defective inflators in May 2021.

FCA will reimburse expenses previously incurred by vehicle owners related to the recall and requests vehicle owners send original receipts and/or other adequate proof of payment to the company for confirmation.

No injuries reported, according to air bag recall

Chrysler says it has not received any reports of injuries related to the recall so far. The company is aware of five customer assistance records and two warranty claims potentially related to this issue.

The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Chrysler will notify customers and dealers starting May 3. Consumers can reach Chrysler by phone at 800-853-1403.

A jury determined Chrysler violated the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act with its faulty automatic headrests earlier this year, but the company was not ordered to pay damages.
