Sargento announces recall for cheese related to Rizo-Lopez recall

Sargento recall overview:

Cheese manufacturer Sargento issued a recall for a limited amount of food service and ingredients products supplied by California-based Rizo-Lopez.

Rizo-Lopez initiated a recall last month for a number of its dairy products over concerns they were contaminated with listeria monocytogenes. 

The recall involves 11 shredded and grated cheese products sold to food service groups in 15 total states, including California, Florida, Washington, Texas and Ohio. 

In a statement, Sargento says the recall is not for any of its name-brand products but rather those supplied by Rizo-Lopez or that were packaged on the same lines. Sargento also states it terminated its relationship with Rizo-Lopez.

Sargento attempts to clear up ‘inaccurate news’ regarding recall

Sargento’s says its statement is in an attempt to clear up inaccurate news circulating about the recall, namely that its Sargento-branded products were affected. 

“As a family-owned company, the safety and quality of its products are top priorities and it remains committed to providing transparency and accuracy,” according to Sargento, which notes it actively shared the correction across its social media channels and websites. 

A consumer filed a class action lawsuit against Sargento in Dec. 2020 over concerns the company mislabeled its cheese products as antibiotic-free because they contain milk from cows treated with antibiotics.
