Rizo-Lopez dairy recall overview: 

  • Who: Rizo-Lopez recently initiated a dairy recall that affects food products from other companies, including Amazon Kitchen, Rico, Trader Joe’s and QFC. 
  • Why: The company initiated the recall over concerns the dairy products, which include cheese, yogurt and sour cream, may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes, contributing to a nationwide illness. 
  • Where: The recalled Rizo-Lopez dairy products were shipped nationwide. 

A recent recall involving dairy produced by Rizo-Lopez affects food products from other companies who used the potentially listeria-contaminated dairy. 

Food products made by Amazon Kitchen, Rico, Custom Made Meals, Trader Joe’s, readymeals, QFC, Albertson’s Safeway, The Savemart Cos. and Raley’s are included in a new product recall list released by the Food Safety and Inspection Service earlier this month. 

The list includes chicken burritos, various types of chicken enchiladas, bacon-wrapped jalapeno peppers, bean and beef dip with cotija cheese and chicken elote. 

Rizo-Lopez initiated a recall for cheese, yogurt and sour cream earlier this month over concerns the foods may have been contaminated with listeria monocytogenes, contributing to illnesses around the country.

Based on information shared by the (U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and (Food and Drug Administration), (Rizo-Lopez) may be a potential source of illness in an ongoing nationwide Listeria monocytogenes outbreak,” the recall notice states. 

The original Rizo-Lopez recall includes products sold under a variety of brand names, including Tio Francisco, Don Francisco, Rizo Bros, Rio Grande, Food City, El Huache, La Ordena and San Carlos, that were shipped nationwide and sold at a variety of retail deli counters. 

Dole recalls salad kits in connection with Rizo-Lopez dairy recall

Dole is also among the companies affected by the Rizo-Lopez dairy recall, with the company initiating its own recall for a limited amount of Dole, President’s Choice and Marketside brand salad kits earlier this month. 

The company initiated the recall over concerns the salad kits, which it distributed to 25 U.S. states and five Canadian provinces, were made on the same line as cheese included in the Rizo-Lopez recall. 

The recalled salad kits include Dole Chopped Kit Avocado Ranch, Dole Premium Kit Southwest Salad, Cajun Ranch Chopped Kit, Supreme Kit Southwest Salad, Sud-Ouest Kit de Salade and Premium Kit Endless Summer. 

Dole says it has not received any reports of illness connected to the recall and advises consumers who own any of the recall salad kits to dispose of the products immediately, according to the recall notice. 

Trader Joe’s recalls several food products with cotija cheese 

Trader Joe’s issued a recall for several of food products containing cotija cheese in connection with the nationwide dairy recall and over concerns the products are contaminated with listeria

Products involved in the Trader Joe’s recall include all lots of the company’s Chicken Enchiladas Verde, Cilantro Salad Dressing, Elote Chopped Salad Kit and Southwest Salad.  

“The cotija cheese that was used to produce the products (in the recall) was manufactured by Rizo-López Foods, Inc.,” the Trader Joe’s recall states. 

Trader Joe’s says it has not received any reports of illness in connection with the recall and that it will be offering a full refund to consumers who purchased the recalled products.
