Smoked salmon, animal cracker recalls overview:

  • Who: St. James Smokehouse recalled batches of smoked salmon, and Toufayan Bakery recalled Publix GreenWise animal crackers.
  • Why: The salmon may be contaminated with listeria, and the animal crackers have undeclared coconut.
  • Where: The recalls are active in the United States.

St. James Smokehouse recalled batches of smoked salmon, and Toufayan Bakery recalled certain animal crackers as the products may not be safe for consumption.

On Sept 1., Toufayan Bakery issued a voluntary recall of its Publix GreenWise Animal Crackers due to an undeclared tree nut allergen (coconut).

The recall notice was posted on the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) website and applies to animal crackers with a UPC of 0-41415-12009-0 and expiration date of Feb 05, 2023.

The cookies are packaged in pouches, net weight 8 oz., and may contain coconut, the animal cracker recall says.

“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to tree nuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product,” it says.

The product was distributed to Publix Supermarkets in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee.

An investigation indicates the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in the production and packaging processes.

“Customers who have purchased Publix GreenWise Animal Crackers are urged to return it to their local store for a full refund,” the animal cracker recall states.

St. James Smokehouse recalls Scotch Reserve Scottish Smoked Salmon

Meanwhile, St. James Smokehouse of Miami, Florida, voluntarily recalled 93 cases of Scotch Reserve Scottish Smoked Salmon because it may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes.

The smoked salmon recall was posted Sept. 2 to the FDA website and applies to St. James Scotch Reserve Scottish Smoked Salmon (Product of Scotland), 4 oz. packages, bearing the lot number 123172 and UPC code 060022710356.

“If consumers have products matching the above description and lot number in their possession, they should dispose of it immediately or return it to the store for a full refund,” the smoked salmon recall says.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems, according to the FDA.

Although healthy people may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The recalled product was sold and distributed by St. James via distributors between February and June 2022.

The smoked salmon was distributed to stores located in Alabama, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Washington State, Virginia and Wisconsin, as well as Safeway Washington State stores.

As of Sept, 2, 2022 no illnesses had been reported. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

The smoked salmon recall was the result of a routine sampling by the Washington State Department of Agriculture that revealed that the salmon product contained the bacteria.

In related food recall news, Whole Foods recalled a Caesar dressing sold under its Market 365 brand because it contains allergens that are not listed on the ingredients label.
