Cinnamon recalls overview:
- Who: La Fiesta and Raja Foods recalled some of their cinnamon products.
- Why: The products tested for elevated levels of lead.
- Where: The La Fiesta cinnamon lead recall is effective for products distributed in California, Arizona, Washington and Texas. The Raja Foods cinnamon lead recall is effective for products distributed in the Midwest, Northeast and Southeast regions of the United States.
La Fiesta and Raja Foods are the latest companies to issue cinnamon recalls due to elevated lead levels.
La Fiesta recalled its 0.87-ounce ground cinnamon with universal product code 032327000449. The product was distributed by the company in California and went to Arizona, Washington and Texas through distributors.
Raja Foods recalled two lots of its 3.5-ounce packages of Swad cinnamon powder with UPC 0-51179-34280-4, marked as “batch KX21223 best before July 2026” and “batch KX08123 best before March 2026.”
The Swad cinnamon powder was distributed in the Midwest, Northeast and Southeast regions of the United States.
The La Fiesta and Raja Foods cinnamon lead recalls come after separate cinnamon recalls from El Chilar Rodriguez and Colonna Brothers for the same reason.
Short-term exposure to low lead levels may not result in symptoms, and increased lead levels in blood are often the only sign of lead exposure, which can impact every bodily system based on the duration of exposure and age or body weight, the recalls say.
Lead exposure can lead to permanent nervous system damage in children and lead to learning disorders and developmental defects, the recalls say.
Lead can also damage the brain or kidneys if too much is ingested, and can interfere with red blood cell production, the cinnamon recalls say.
Currently no reports of illness from cinnamon lead, recalls say
La Fiesta and Raja Foods say the companies have not received any reports of illness or adverse effects related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
Both La Fiesta and Raja Foods say that the cinnamon was randomly tested by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which found the elevated lead levels.
The companies urge customers to stop using the cinnamon products and return it to the place of purchase for a refund.
La Fiesta can be reached at 408-326-0487 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. PT, Monday through Friday or at qualityassurance@lffp.com.
Raja Foods can be reached at 847-972-2865 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. CT, Monday through Friday.
