Mazda steering defect recall overview:

  • Who: Mazda recalled more than 43,000 of its model year 2024 CX-90 vehicles.
  • Why: The Mazda recall was initiated over concerns the recalled vehicles contain a steering wheel defect that could increase the risk of a crash.
  • Where: The recall affects certain Mazda vehicle owners nationwide.

Mazda issued a recall of more than 43,000 of its model year 2024 CX-90 vehicles over concerns they contain a steering wheel defect that may increase the risk of a crash.

The recall involves a total of 43,752 model year 2024 Mazda CX-90 vehicles produced between Dec. 27, 2022, and Dec. 11, 2023.

Mazda said owners of the recalled vehicles may feel a sudden increase of effort when steering their vehicle as a result of an excessive amount of friction force from a gear connected to the power steering motor.

“Sudden and unexpected change of steering effort while driving may increase risk of a crash,” the recall states.

The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Mazda to notify affected vehicle owners about the recall by March 18

Mazda said it will notify affected vehicle owners about the recall by mail on or before March 18, 2024. The company will instruct them to take their vehicle to a Mazda dealer to have the worm gear replaced with an “improved” part, free of charge.

The automaker noted that any repairs related to the steering wheel defect would have been covered under its new-vehicle warranty, meaning no reimbursement plan for repairs made in connection with the issue is being offered.

Mazda previously initiated a recall in July for more than 227,000 of its Mazda3 and CX-3 vehicles over concerns they were equipped with defective rearview cameras that may not display an image properly
