Tesla rearview camera recall overview:

  • Who: Tesla recalled nearly 200,000 model year 2023 Tesla Model S, X and Y vehicles.
  • Why: The recall was initiated because the vehicles’ rearview cameras can potentially malfunction and fail to display an image.
  • Where: The recall affects certain Tesla vehicle owners nationwide.

Tesla issued a recall of nearly 200,000 of its model year 2023 Tesla Model S, X and Y vehicles over concerns they were equipped with a rearview camera that could malfunction and fail to display an image.

The recall involves a total of 199,575 Tesla Model S, X and Y vehicles equipped with a full self-driving computer 4.0 that is running a software release version from 2023.44.30 through 2023.44.30.6 or 2023.44.100.

“Unavailability of the rearview camera display upon starting a backing event may affect the driver’s rear visibility and increase the risk of a collision,” the recall says.

Tesla began deploying over-the-air software update to remedy issue in December

Tesla said it has been fixing the issue at no cost to affected vehicle owners with an over-the-air software update that it began deploying on or shortly after Dec. 28, 2023.

The automaker notified all Tesla stores and service centers about the recall on or shortly after Jan. 24, 2024, while it plans to mail owner notification letters by March 22, according to the Tesla recall.

Tesla previously recalled more than 2 million of vehicles last month over concerns they were equipped with an autopilot feature that could increase the risk of a crash by causing drivers to fail to maintain responsibility for the operation of their vehicle.
