Rivian recall overview:
- Who: Rivian Automotive LLC is recalling 98,828 vehicles, including 2022-2026 R1T, 2022-2027 R1S and 2027 R2 models.
- Why: The recall is due to a software defect that may prevent the rearview camera image from displaying correctly.
- Where: The recall is active in the United States.
Rivian is recalling nearly 99,000 electric vehicles due to a software glitch that affects the rearview camera display when reversing. The recall impacts certain models of the R1T, R1S and R2 vehicles produced between 2021 and 2026, including the Rivian R1S.
The recall was submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Sept. 16.
The defect arises when a vehicle’s stability control is turned off in certain drive modes, and the driver does not select a mode with stability control on before reversing. This can cause a notification to overlap the camera image until the vehicle begins moving, at which point the image reappears.
This issue was identified during internal testing and affects vehicles manufactured from Aug. 23, 2021, to Aug. 10, 2026, the Rivian recall states.
Rivian says software fix already applied to most vehicles
Rivian is addressing the issue by providing a software update that corrects the condition.
This update is already installed in over 95% of the affected vehicles, and all newly produced vehicles after Aug. 10, 2026, include the corrected software. Rivian encourages all owners to update their vehicles to the latest available software if they have not done so already.
