Hyundai is recalling 5,360 of its 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 9 SUVs due to a defect in the power-folding seats, which may not detect when someone is seated, potentially causing injury.
The Hyundai recall affects vehicles with specific trim packages and is active in the United States.
The recall, announced on Sept. 11, applies to Hyundai Ioniq 9 SUVs manufactured between March 17, 2025, and May 4, 2026. These vehicles, equipped with Limited, Calligraphy or Calligraphy Design trim packages, have a software issue that affects the second-row power seats.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the seats might continue to move or fold even when occupied, posing a risk, particularly to children.
“The seats may continue to move after contacting a person during powered seat functions,” the Hyundai recall notice states.
Consumers can update their software over the air or visit a dealership
Hyundai is taking proactive measures to address the issue by offering a software update. This update can be accessed over-the-air or by visiting a Hyundai dealership, where the repair will be carried out at no cost to the vehicle owners.
Owners are also advised to exercise caution when operating the second-row power seat functions until the repair is performed

Hyundai has confirmed it received two reports of minor injuries and five consumer complaints related to the Ioniq 9 recall in the United States. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
Earlier this year, Hyundai was hit with a class action lawsuit claiming it knew about a defect in the emergency braking system of Tucson SUVs before bringing them to market.
