Volkswagen is recalling more than 208,000 vehicles, including specific models of Atlas, Tiguan and Audi Q3, due to a potential steering rack defect that could compromise steering control.
The recall, announced on Sept. 11, affects the 2018-2019 Volkswagen Atlas, 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan and the 2019-2021 Audi Q3 vehicles.
The issue stems from a mounting bolt on the steering rack that may corrode when moisture penetrates the area, potentially leading to a fracture. This could result in the steering rack being attached to the vehicle’s subframe at only one point.
“A broken steering rack housing can result in a loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash,” the Volkswagen recall notice states.
Volkswagen recall advises drivers to listen for warning signs
The recall notice states that such a failure is most likely to occur during parking or low-speed maneuvers when steering loads are high. The recall notice advises owners to be alert for unusual metallic rattling or knocking noises from the front axle area, which could indicate the issue.
Volkswagen has assured that dealers will replace the right steering rack mounting bolt with a new bolt that features a highly corrosion-resistant polymer coating. This replacement aims to prevent future corrosion issues and will be provided at no cost to the vehicle owners.
For further information, consumers can visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s recall page and enter their vehicle identification number to check if their vehicle is affected.
Additionally, Volkswagen customer service is available at 1-800-893-5298 for any inquiries related to the recall, quoting recall numbers 48LG and 48VT.
Volkswagen says it has not received any reports of injuries or accidents related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the Volkswagen recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
