Ford Explorer recall overview:

  • Who: Ford Motor Co. is recalling nearly 1.9 million of its 2011-2019 Explorer vehicles.
  • Why: A retention clip on the vehicles’ A-pillar trim can detach and fall off the vehicle.
  • Where: The Ford Explorer recall is valid across the United States.

Ford Motor Co. has issued a recall of nearly 1.9 million of its 2011-2019 Explorer vehicles due to a retention clip issue that can lead to windshield trim falling off the vehicle.

If the trim falls off a vehicle, it can become a road hazard and increase the risk of a crash, the Explorer recall safety report says.

The attachment clips for the trim, which runs along the right and left side of the windshield, were either loose, missing or detached because they were not properly assembled or repaired, the Ford windshield trim recall says.

“The customer may visually detect gaps around a loose A-pillar trim or detect an audible rattle and/or excessive wind noise from A-pillar area,” the recall says.

The trim clips were used from May 17, 2010, through March 3, 2019, the recall says.

Ford or Lincoln dealers will fix or replace Ford windshield trim attachment

Ford did not indicate whether it has received any reports of injuries related to the recall so far. The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Ford recall notices were sent to dealers Jan. 22 and will be sent to vehicle owners between March 13 and 25. A Ford or Lincoln dealer can inspect the A-pillar exterior trim and replace defective parts for free as required. Out-of-pocket costs for fixes made before a safety recall notice in March 2023 will be reimbursed, the Ford windshield recall notice says.

Ford can be reached at 866-436-7332, or customers can contact a local Ford or Lincoln dealer about specific information regarding the vehicle.

Ford announced a recall in October for 238,364 of its model year 2020-2022 Ford Explorer SUVs over concerns their rear axle horizontal mounting bolt may fracture and cause the vehicle’s driveshaft to disconnect.

Been hearing the noise from the windshield for years now, especially at higher speeds. Going on a trip, what happens if car is disabled? I have no car and my trip is ruined. Thanks Ford, for knowing about this for years and not dealing with it till now. I would like to be part of a class action lawsuit for the danger we’ve been put in, gross negligence, etc. Ford says they have heard of no injuries. Of course they haven’t. Amazing how nothing bad has come of something as dangerous as this. One reply to this site says the driver went off the shoulder and hit a pole. No injuries over the past 3 years? Come on.

Pls add me. Secondly, when the least amount of rain or going thru acar wash, my 2012 explorer XLT has potential to leak from the top of the driver side third row seat belt. I’ve seen online where this tends to be a problem with these vehicles. Is there any potential recalls coming.

I have replaced both of mine twice in the last year. Noticed huge gaps with rubber like piece hanging out on the driver side. While driving 70+mph down the interstate the plastic pillar flys off leaving a flapping rubber seal beating my driver side window. My son is a Ford ASE certified mechanic that handles all my service work. We bought replacement set to which clips broke at installation. There are two pieces..top & bottom that clip together. It’s better to buy set with clips. However it took two times for us to get a good set. Clips break easily. I will be getting a reimbursement since mine are already taken care of.
What I’d like to see as a recall to fix the door code locks that’s been a known problem for decades. Just replacing the panel doesn’t fix it. Unlock code works then suddenly your locked out because it stopped for good. Come on Ford let’s own this one!!

I had the same problem with mine, I couldn’t believe something flew off my car I was driving on the highway at 65-70 mph, I heard rattling noise but didn’t know what it was until something flew off my car and then I wasn’t sure if it hit another car and then rubber was hitting my windshield and passenger window I was so worried my windows were going to break, I tried getting over as safely as possible but I did hit a pole because I was scared and trying to get off on the shoulder to see what flew off my car, what a mess!!!! Seems like a lot of recalls
