- Why: The high-voltage battery may catch fire due to thermal propagation.
- Where: The recall is active in the United States.
Volkswagen is recalling 22,524 ID.4 electric vehicles from model years 2023 through 2026 due to a potential fire risk associated with the high-voltage battery.
The recall, announced on Oct. 8, affects ID.4 models produced between Jan. 1, 2023, and Feb. 1, 2025. The issue stems from the possibility of thermal propagation in the battery, which could lead to a fire if the state of charge exceeds 80%.
According to Volkswagen’s safety recall report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the root cause of the defect is still unknown.
Volkswagen says it has identified 22 U.S. claims between Jan. 18, 2024, and Aug. 7, 2026, related to recall.
Drivers advised to limit charging to prevent battery fires
Volkswagen says it is currently working on a final remedy for the issue. In the meantime, affected owners will receive warning stickers to remind them not to charge their vehicles above 80%. Some vehicles may also be configured to automatically cap the battery’s maximum state of charge at 80%.
The recall notice indicates that the battery supplier, SK Battery America Inc., is involved in the investigation to determine the defect’s root cause. The recall includes three specific high-voltage battery part numbers: 11K.915.599.A, 11K.915.599.D and 11K.915.592.D.
For more information, drivers can contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. The recall number is 93EX, and the NHTSA recall number is 26V630. Interim owner notification letters are expected to be mailed by Nov. 27.
Volkswagen says it has not received any reports of injuries related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
In September, Volkswagen recalled more than 208,000 vehicles, including the Atlas, Tiguan and Audi Q3, due to a potential steering rack defect that could compromise steering control.
