Honda, Toyota, other auto companies recall vehicles in December

December vehicle recalls overview: 

• Who: Mazda, Chrysler, Honda, Nissan, Ford, Tesla and Toyota initiated vehicle recalls in late November and December. 
• Why: The automakers initiated the vehicle recalls were initiated over concerns involving airbags, turn signals, high beams, seatbelts, fuel pumps, headlights, doors and autopilot features. 
• Where: The recalls impacted owners of the recalled vehicles nationwide. 

Mazda, Ford, Nissan, Tesla, Toyota, Honda and Chrysler initiated vehicle recalls in late November and December.

The automakers conducted the vehicle recalls over concerns involving airbags, turn signals, high beams, seatbelts, fuel pumps, headlights, doors and autopilot features. 

An automaker may choose to initiate a recall if it determines a vehicle contains a defect that could make it unsafe for drivers, passengers and other vehicles and pedestrians on the roadway. 

Mazda recalls pickup trucks over airbag inflator concerns

Mazda recalled 12,741 of its model year 2004-2006 MAZDA B-Series pickup trucks earlier this month over concerns the airbag inflators for their front passenger airbags may have been installed incorrectly during a previous Takata recall repair. 

The automaker says it has not received reports of injury in connection with the recall and expects to notify vehicle owners by Jan. 12. 

An incorrectly installed airbag inflator could cause issues with airbag deployment, increasing the risk of injury in the event of a crash, according to the Mazda recall. 

Chrysler Rams, Chassis Cabs recalled over steering column control module concerns

Chrysler recalled 142,150 of its Ram and Chassis Cab vehicles earlier this month over concerns their steering column control module could malfunction and cause their high beams to turn on at the same time as the turn signal and vice versa. 

The recall involves model year 2023 Ram 1500 Classic, Ram 3500 Classic and 3500 Chassis Cab vehicles and 2023-2024 Ram 2500, 4500/5500 Chassis Cab and Ram 3500 vehicles. 

Chrysler says it is concerned the malfunction could cause drivers to become confused or reduce visibility for others on the road, increasing the risk of an accident, according to the recall notice. 

Honda recalls vehicles over seat belt, fuel pump defects

Honda recalled 303,770 of its model year 2023-2024 Honda Accord and HR-V vehicles in late November over concerns they are equipped with defective seat belts that may fail to properly restrain a vehicle occupant. 

The automaker initiated the recall after it discovered the seat belt pretensioners in the recalled HR-V and Accord vehicles may be missing a rivet that is used to secure their quick connector and wire plate, the recall notice states. 

Honda says it will have its dealers inspect and replace the seat belt pretensioner assemblies in the recalled vehicles as necessary and free of charge and expects to mail notification letters to affected vehicle owners on Jan. 8, 2024. 

The automaker also recalled more than 2.5 million vehicles earlier this month over a fuel pump defect. 

The recall involves a wide range of model year 2017-2020 Honda vehicles, including its Acura NSX, Accord Hybrid and CR-V Hybrid vehicles, among others. 

Honda initiated the recall after discovering an improperly molded fuel pump left some fuel pumps in the recalled vehicles inoperable, leading to the vehicles either failing to start or stalling during operation, according to the recall notice.

Nissan recalls Infiniti QX60 vehicles over potential headlight issue 

Nissan recalled more than 20,000 of its model year 2022-2024 Infiniti QX60 vehicles earlier this month over concerns involving a potential issue with their Adaptive Front-Light Systems (AFS). 

The automaker initiated the recall after discovering the AFS on the recalled Infiniti vehicles may adjust the headlights downward if the vehicle is driven at high speeds, according to the recall notice. 

Nissan, which did not indicate whether it has received reports of injury in connection with the recall, says it will mail recall notification letters to affected vehicle owners by Jan. 12. 

Ford recalls Fiesta, Fusion, Lincoln MKZs over door concerns 

Ford recalled more than 45,000 of its Fiesta, Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles earlier this month over concerns they contain a defect that could cause their doors to open while the vehicle is in operation. 

The recall involves 45,173 model year 2015 Ford Fiesta, 2016-2020 Ford Fusion and 2016 Lincoln MKZ vehicles. 

Ford says the defect is the result of a latch sprawl spring tab design “susceptible to cracking and failure in areas with high ambient temperatures,” according to the recall notice.

Tesla recalls 2M+ vehicles over autopilot concerns

Tesla recalled more than 2 million of its vehicles earlier this month over concerns the autopilot feature could increase the risk of an accident. 

The recall involves model year 2017-2023 Tesla Model 3, 2012-2023 Tesla Model S, 2016-2023 Tesla Model X and 2020-2023 Tesla Model Y vehicles equipped with the automaker’s Autosteer autopilot feature. 

Tesla says it is concerned vehicle owners who use the Autosteer feature could fail to maintain responsibility for their vehicles’ operation and be unprepared if it becomes necessary to intervene, the recall notice states. 

The automaker also says a Tesla driver using Autosteer could fail to notice when the feature is either canceled or no longer engaged. 

Toyota, Lexus vehicles recalled front passenger seat sensor defect

Toyota recalled around 1 million of its model year 2020-2022 Toyota and Lexus vehicles earlier this month over concerns they are equipped with defective front passenger seat sensors that could prevent their airbags from deploying properly. 

The recall involves a number of different Toyota and Lexus vehicles, including the Toyota RAV4, Corolla, Avalon Hybrid and Highlander and Lexus ES250 and ES350 vehicles. 

Toyota says it plans to notify affected vehicle owners by the middle of February and plans to remedy the issue by having its dealers inspect and replace the sensors as necessary and at no cost to vehicle owners, according to the recall notice.
