General Motors Airbag Inflator Recall Overview:

- Why: The recall was initiated over concerns they may contain airbags that can explode and cause injury or death.
- Where: The recall is nationwide.
General Motors is recalling 2,687 of its SUVS from model year 2015 over concerns they contain airbag inflators that can explode and cause injury.
The recall affects model year 2015 Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia SUVs, according to a recall notice published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Apr. 14.
GM says it used “part traceability data and manufacturing records” to identify the SUVs that may be equipped with “a suspect airbag inflator.”
The issue is caused by the airbag’s inflator, which can rupture and cause metal fragments to pass through the airbag and go into the SUVs cabin, according to the GM recall.
GM says the potential explosion can “result in injury or death to vehicle occupants.”
The automaker says it was first made aware of the issue following an accident of a 2015 Chevrolet Traverse in November 2021, after which, in February 2022, the claimant alleged their front-driver airbag inflator “ruptured during the crash.”
GM Finds Front Driver Airbag Inflator Had Ruptured During Crash, According to Recall
During an inspection of the SUV, GM determined that the front driver airbag inflator had in fact “ruptured during the crash deployment,” according to the GM recall.
GM says it is continuing to investigate the issue and reassured drivers that it has not received another “rupture allegation involving the vehicles in this recall population.”
The automaker says it plans to remedy the issue by having GM dealers “replace the front driver airbag module,” according to the GM recall.
GM says it does not plan to provide any notice of reimbursement to vehicle owners since they would “not have been aware of the issue” prior to the recall notice.
Dealers began receiving notification about the recall on Apr. 14 while notification for vehicle owners is estimated to begin on May 30, according to the GM recall.
A class action lawsuit was filed against GM in March over claims that trucks and SUVs manufactured by the company since 1999 contain defective airbag deployment systems.
