GameStop recently recalled a collectible helmet item due to concerns that the helmet’s lining contains mold.
On Sept. 19, the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that GameStop’s parent company Chronicle LLC would be recalling their T-51b Power Armor Collectible Helmet.
GameStop is one of the largest game retailers in the world and sells video games, consoles, accessories, toys, and collectibles.
The one size fits all helmets were reportedly sold to consumers as a collectible item in relation to the Fallout video game series. Fallout is a game series that features post-apocalyptic story lines and a grungy aesthetic. The collectible Fallout items which reflect this look are made of ABS plastic and a polyester/cotton blend fabric liner with elastic. The product name “T-51b” and “Power Armor Helmet” reportedly appears on the product packaging.
According to the recall announcement, the helmet is being recalled due to concerns that mold is present in the helmet’s fabric insert. This can reportedly pose a risk for respiratory and other infections for individuals with compromised immune systems, lung damage, or mold allergies. The company has not received any reports of this issue but has initiated a voluntary recall of the collectible product.
Around 20,000 units are reportedly included in the recall. The affected Power Armor Collectible Helmets were sold online at GameStop.com for around $150 in June 2019.
Mold can grow in damp environments such as flooded areas but can also occur in fabric. The health effects of will depend on the type of mold and a person’s sensitivity to mold.
Some people may simply be sensitive to mold, leading to nasal stuffiness, throat irritation, coughing, eye irritation, and skin irritation. People who are allergic to mold may experience the same and more severe reactions. If people have immune system weakness or lung problems, they may be at risk for developing serious lung infections after coming into contact with mold.
Due to these risks, GameStop is recalling their Power Armor Collectible Helmet. Consumers can contact GameStop for a full refund of their helmet purchase.
“Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled collectible helmets and contact GameStop for a full refund and return instructions,” the CPSC reports. “GameStop is contacting all known purchasers directly.”
If consumers would like more information about the recall, they can contact GameStop at 800-883-8895 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or through email at ProductSafety@gamestop.com (with subject line “Product Recall”).
The CPSC is a federal agency that works to protect consumers from the dangers of defective products. This includes products that pose a fire, electrical, chemical, or mechanical hazard. Deaths, injuries, and property damage from these hazards reportedly costs the nation more than $1 trillion each year.
“CPSC’s work to help ensure the safety of consumer products – such as toys, cribs, power tools, cigarette lighters and household chemicals -– contributed to a decline in the rate of deaths and injuries associated with consumer products over the past 40 years,” the CPSC states.
