Walmart Room Spray Recall Overview:

  • Who: Walmart has recalled 3,900 Better Homes and Gardens Essential Oil Infused Aromatherapy Room Spray with Gemstones.
  • Why: A rare and dangerous bacteria linked to two deaths was found in a bottle of the aromatherapy room spray at one of the victim’s homes.
  • Where: The spray is being recalled across the United States.

Walmart has recalled 3,900 essential oil infused aromatherapy room sprays after a rare and dangerous bacteria that has killed two people was found in a bottle in one of the victim’s homes.

A total of four people have been infected with melioidosis, a condition caused by the Burkholderia pseudomallei bacteria, and two have died, including a child, the recall notices states.

Although the link to Walmart’s Better Homes and Gardens Essential Oil Infused Aromatherapy Room Spray with Gemstones has not been confirmed, the company is recalling all of the products in six different scents due to the presence of the “rare and dangerous bacteria and risk of serious injury and death,” says the Walmart recall notice.

The cases were reported in Kansas, Minnesota, Texas, and Georgia.

Samples taken from a bottle of the Better Homes and Gardens Lavender & Chamomile aromatherapy room spray discovered in the home of the Georgia victim and tested by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) revealed Burkholderia pseudomallei bacteria, which are typically found in South Asia.

Walmart Urgently Warns Consumers To Stop Using Room Spray

The aromatherapy room spray was made in India and sold at about 55 Walmart stores nationwide and online at walmart.com from February 2021 through October 2021 for about $4.

“Better Homes and Gardens Aromatherapy” is printed on the label on the front of the 5-ounce glass bottle. The aromatherapy was sold with a pump spray nozzle in scents including lavender and chamomile, lemon and mandarin, lavender, peppermint, lime and eucalyptus, and sandalwood and vanilla.

The CDC is urging consumers to stop using the product immediately and not to open the bottle.

The agency says consumers should not throw away or dispose of the sprays, but should double bag them in clean, clear zip-top resealable bags and place them in a small cardboard box and return the bagged and boxed product to a Walmart store.

Consumers will get a full refund for the product and a $20 Walmart Gift Card.

According to the CDC, melioidosis is difficult to diagnose and it is often mistaken for other diseases such as tuberculosis or more common forms of pneumonia.

Symptoms can include localized pain or swelling, fever, ulceration, abscess, pulmonary infection, cough, chest pain, anorexia, bloodstream infection, respiratory distress, central nervous system/brain infection, seizures and more.

For more information, consumers can contact Walmart by phone or online on the retailer’s recall website.

Top Class Actions will continue to monitor this and other Walmart recalls to help keep consumers informed.

Indeed, in a separate product recall issued by Walmart this month, three lots of Parent’s Choice Rice Baby Cereal were pulled from the shelves after the manufacturer found traces of the heavy metal arsenic in the food.

Walmart supplier Maple Island Inc. is currently facing multiple class action lawsuits over the presence of toxic heavy metals in its baby food.
