Beef Recall Overview:

  • Who: The U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service announced a recall of more than 100 tons of beef manufactured by Greater Omaha Packing Company in Nebraska.
  • Why: A routine product sample revealed the presence of E. coli O157:h7, which can cause potentially fatal infections in humans, though most people recover from an infection within a week.
  • Where: The products were produced in Nebraska and distributed to processors in that state as well as in Illinois, Indiana, and Minnesota.

A Nebraska beef company is recalling 147.6 tons of raw beef products that may be contaminated with a potentially fatal type of E.coli.

The recall for 295,236 pounds of raw beef products from Greater Omaha Packing Company was announced on the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) website Thursday.

The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits

According to the recall, the affected products were produced on July 13 and were distributed to processors in Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, and Nebraska. The problem was discovered when FSIS did a routine product sample that returned positive for the presence of E. coli O157:H7.

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to eating the products so far, the company said. However, anyone concerned about illness from eating the beef should contact a healthcare provider.

The FSIS said E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea, and abdominal cramps 2 to 8 days after exposure. It said, while most people recover within a week, some develop kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome.

This condition can occur at any age but is most common in children under five, and older adults. Consumers should look out for signs of easy bruising, pallor, and decreased urination.

“Persons who experience these symptoms should seek emergency medical care immediately,” the FSIS said.

The FSIS said it has reached out to known customers and distributors to make sure the product was no longer available to buy.

The products were distributed to processors in Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota and Nebraska. The complete list of beef products subject to recall can be found here.

Beef is sometimes the meat in the sandwich of major class action lawsuits. In a class action lawsuit filed in 2020, a group of grocers claimed that several major meat packing and processing companies conspired to inflate beef prices.

The complaint alleged that defendants Tyson Foods, Cargill, National Beef Packing and JBS USA Food Company Holdings engaged in an illegal price-fixing scheme.
