More Products Affected by the Ground Turkey RecallThe recent Jennie-O ground turkey recall has been expanded due to new concerns about possible salmonella contamination.

Following an earlier ground turkey recall announced last month, further reports of illness have led to even more products than originally anticipated being added to the recall. The expanded recall reflects concerns that more consumers are at risk of getting sick when cooking with the potentially contaminated ground turkey, especially if the turkey was removed from the package.

The more recent ground turkey recall affects more than 164,000 pounds of Jennie-O raw ground turkey products that might contain salmonella and could make purchasers sick. Consumers who may have stored turkey in their freezer should be mindful of whether or not their lot was affected by the recall.

The products that are affected by the ground turkey recall were produced on Oct. 22nd and Oct. 23rd and shipped throughout the country. Some of the items included in the ground turkey recall include 1 lbs., 2.5 lbs. and 3 lbs. packages.

The establishment number located on the package can help to clarify whether or not you might have purchased the affected turkey.Recalled packages show the establishment number EST.P-579 on their label. This information can be located on the side of the tray or inside the USDA mark of inspection, according to a news release shared by the Food Safety and Inspection Service.

The FSIS recommends that anyone who might have purchased products affected by the ground turkey recall and have it inside their freezer should not consume it and should instead return them to the place of purchase or thrown away. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced on the same day that officials and the agency in numerous states are exploring the raw turkey product outbreak of salmonella that could stretch across several different states.

So far, over 200 people in 38 different states and the District of Columbia have been reportedly affected with salmonella reading. One fatality associated with the ground turkey recall was reported in California, and more than 80 people have been hospitalized for their symptoms.

The outbreak strain of salmonella is found in many raw turkey products and is currently present in live turkeys. The CDC has shared that the ground turkey recall has been expanded since it might be widespread throughout the turkey industry and people who have been sick reported buying numerous different brands of raw turkey products from many different stores.

Anyone who might have purchased products affected by the ground turkey recall is instructed to throw it away. In general, the FSIS recommends always cooking all poultry products to a safe internal temperature of 165o F to decrease the risk of developing salmonella or other food-related illnesses. The agency says consumers should never eat raw or partially cooked turkey. To avoid cross-contamination, those handling raw meat, pet food or poultry should always wash their hands.
