Several companies were forced to recall enoki and seafood mushroom products that may have been contaminated with life-threatening listeria.

In five separate recall warnings issued recently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advised consumers to throw away mushrooms sold by Marquis Worldwide Specialty IncSun Hong Foods, IncConcord FarmsCalifornia Terra Garden IncRainfield Marketing Group, Inc. The recalled mushrooms were sold nationwide by the California-based companies.

The mushrooms, seafood and enoki varieties, may be contaminated by Listeria monocytogenes – which can cause life-threatening illness or death, according to the regulator. Healthy adults may only be at risk for a short-term illness, including fever, headache, stiffness, and nausea; however, the elderly, young children, and those with a compromised immune system can face serious and even fatal infections.

In addition, listeria can increase the risk of miscarriage or stillbirth in pregnant people.

“Consumers are warned not to consume even if it does not look or smell spoiled,” warns the FDA. The regulator urges consumers to either dispose of the recalled mushrooms or return them to the place of purchase.

No illnesses or injuries have been reported yet, but consumers who have eaten the recalled mushrooms and are experiencing illness should seek medical care as soon as possible, says the agency.

Seafood mushrooms were sold by Sun Hong and California Terra Garden Inc, under the brand name “Guan’s.” They are white with long, white stems and caps.

The recalled enoki mushrooms were sold by Marquis Worldwide Specialty Inc, Concord Farms, and Rainfield Marketing Group, Inc. Enoki mushrooms are white and stringy with a small cap.

“Mushrooms are fungi, meaning they are not vegetables or fruits,” says one of the FDA’s recall notices. “Consumers should never eat mushrooms raw. All surfaces, utensils or containers that are used for preparing mushrooms should be separated from other foods to avoid cross-contamination.”

Top Class Actions will continue to monitor this and other food product recalls in the interest of consumer safety.
