Cases of Enoki mushroom are being recalled due to a potential listeria contamination.

Cases of enoki mushrooms are being recalled nationwide as they may contain Listeria monocytogenes, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections.

Guan’s Mushroom Co. announced the recall of all of its 200g/7.05-ounce packages of enoki mushroom Tuesday, with the U.S. Food & Drug Administration.

The mushrooms were sold at retail stores nationwide, and came from produce distributors or wholesalers in California, New York and Pennsylvania.

“Consumers who have purchased 200g packages of Enoki are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund,” the recall said.

Guan’s Mushroom Co. is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits

According to the recall, the potential for contamination was discovered during routine testing by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, which revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in one of the packs.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious infections or even death for young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems, the recall says. It can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Healthy people may suffer short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

No illnesses have been reported so far in connection with the recalled mushrooms. Distribution of the product has been suspended, Guan’s Mushroom Co. said.

Wondering if your mushrooms are in the recall? Check the packet. The mushrooms come in a 200g/7.05 ounce, clear plastic package with “Enoki Mushroom” in English, Korean and French on the front along with Guan’s logo.

On the back there will be a UPC code 810023170303, and product code RY3428A or RY3434A located on the front bottom. Consumers with questions can contact the company on 323-223-1188.

Mushrooms are sometimes at the center of recalls, like most fresh food items, and from time to time at the center of class action lawsuits.

In 2016, a group of mushroom buyers accused growers and sellers of conspiring to fix prices on the fungi in a nationwide class action lawsuit.
