- Where: The Mid-America Pet Food salmonella lawsuit was filed in federal court in Texas.
A new class action lawsuit accuses Mid-America Pet Food of mishandling its pet food, contributing to salmonella contamination that sparked a series of recalls.
The company goes out of its way to make claims about the safety of its food by stating it has “guaranteed quality,” “extensive testing” and “credible food safety,” the class action says.
But the extra steps and quality control did not prevent a series of recalls related to the salmonella contamination.
The contamination led the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to open an investigation into seven cases of salmonella in humans that were connected to Mid-America Pet Food.
“Six of seven cases reported were in children one year of age or younger — vulnerable members of the population who are most susceptible to severe, life-threatening complications from salmonella exposure,” the Mid-America Pet Food lawsuit says.
Cases of illness likely connected to Mid-America Pet Food salmonella contamination, CDC concluded
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) concluded that “people likely got sick by touching this dog food, touching things like dog bowls that contained this dog food, or touching the poop or saliva of dogs that were fed this dog food.”
The CDC estimates salmonella causes around 1.35 million illnesses, 26,500 hospitalizations and 420 deaths in the United States.
“Given this long-recognized danger, manufacturers should have in place or implement robust quality and preventive control standards and practices to avoid the inclusion of Salmonella-contaminated ingredients in pet foods,” the Mid-America Pet Food class action says.
Another Mid-America Pet Food class action lawsuit was filed in Texas federal court in late 2023 over the salmonella contamination.

We bought a huge bag of Victor and our dog started feeling bad. Then we started feeling bad and I saw the post about the recall and realized we had salmonella poisoning from the symptoms listed. We took about 1/4-1/2 bag back and Tractor Supply made it good, but meanwhile we were sick for about a week. It was rough.
