Salento Organics recalled six different dark chocolate bites products as they may contain undeclared milk.
The Florida company announced the recall March 29 on the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) website.
It applies to various lots of 4-oz. packages of Dark Chocolate Pitaya Bites, Dark Chocolate Goldenberry Bites, Dark Chocolate Mango Bites, Dark Chocolate Banana Bites, Dark Chocolate Pineapple Bites and Dark Chocolate Peanut Bites.
“People who have allergies to milk run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products,” the Salento recall states.
No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem, the company says.
The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.
Breakdown in production, packaging processes caused issue, dark chocolate recall says
Salento Organics distributed the products nationwide in retail stores and through mail orders, the recall states.
The company initiated it after discovering the milk-containing product was in packaging that did not reveal the presence of milk.
“Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in the company’s production and packaging processes,” the Salento dark chocolate recall says.
Production of the product is suspended until the FDA and the company are certain the problem has been corrected.
Consumers who have purchased 4-oz. packages of Dark Chocolate Fruit and Peanut Bites, listed here, should return them to the place of purchase for a full refund, the Salento recall says.
In related news, last year, Wilton Industries Inc. recalled packs of rainbow sprinkles that contained undeclared milk, which could cause life-threatening reactions in some people who have a milk allergy.
