Hand sanitizer recall overview:

  • Who: Jarman’s Midwest Cleaning Services Inc. recalled specific one-gallon clear or white plastic bottles of its hand sanitizer.
  • Why: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration found methanol in the hand sanitizer during testing.
  • Where: The hand sanitizer recall is valid in the United States.

Jarman’s Midwest Cleaning Services, Inc. recalled some one-gallon bottles of its hand sanitizer due to the presence of methanol.

The nationwide recall includes Jarman’s Alcohol Antiseptic 80% Topical Solution Hand Sanitizer Non-sterile Solution and Isopropyl Alcohol Antiseptic 75% Topical Solution Hand Sanitizer Non-sterile Solution.

Methanol exposure can lead to vomiting, nausea, headache, blurred vision, coma, seizures, permanent blindness, permanent damage to the central nervous system or death, according to the hand sanitizer recall. The largest risk is to young children who accidentally ingest the product or adults who drink the product as an alcohol substitute.

Jarman’s produced the products between March 24 and Dec. 10, 2020. The products have a National Drug Code of 77518-200-01 for the 80% solution and 74663-002-01 for the 75% solution. They come in one-gallon containers and four-packs of one-gallon containers, according to the hand sanitizer recall.

Consumers should stop using hand sanitizer immediately, recall says

Jarman’s says it has not received any reports of illness related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Consumers with questions on the recall or who want to return the hand sanitizer can contact Jarman’s at (800) 288-0741 between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. CT Monday through Friday or email recall@mwcleaningsolutions.com.

In related hand sanitizer news, in February, a consumer filed a class action lawsuit against Vi-Jon Inc., claiming its Germ-X hand sanitizer does not have the germ-killing effectiveness the company advertises.
