The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a public health alert for certain ready-to-cook chicken entree products that may contain an allergen that is not declared on the product label.
FSIS alerted consumers who are allergic to eggs that they should not consume a bacon-cheddar chicken entree product sold at Publix because an incorrect label was placed on the container.
The product at issue was reportedly produced on Sept. 9, 2022, and available in a 12-ounce plastic wrapped metal container. It states “aprons READY TO COOK MEAL FOR ONE BACON-CHEDDAR SMOTHERED CHICKEN” on the label with a use-by date of Sept. 21, 2022. Establishment number “P-48176” is also printed inside the USDA mark of inspection.
The affected chicken entree products were reportedly shipped to Publix locations in the following states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
A recall for the mislabeled products was not issued because they are no longer being sold.
Publix health alert urges consumers with egg allergies to check fridge, freezer for bacon-cheddar chicken entree product
The mislabeling issue was reported by a customer who notified Publix that the label on the bacon-cheddar chicken entree contained information about a different chicken cordon bleu product that does not contain egg.
The bacon-cheddar chicken entree does actually contain egg, which can cause adverse reactions in consumers with egg allergies, according to the Publix health alert.
Although the bacon-cheddar chicken product is no longer sold in stores, FSIS issued the alert because consumers may have the product in their refrigerators or freezers. The agency urges consumers with egg allergies not to consume the products and instead throw them out or return them to the Publix store from which they were purchased.
FSIS notes that there have not been any confirmed reports of adverse reactions from consumers.
In related news, Publix recently recalled GreenWise Animal Crackers due to an undeclared coconut allergen present in the product.
