Tesla Seat Belt Chimes Recall Overview:

  • Who: Tesla announced a recall for more than 817,000 of its vehicles.
  • Why: The vehicles are being recalled due to concerns about their seat belt chimes.
  • Where: The recall is nationwide.

Tesla has announced it is recalling more than 817,000 vehicles in the United States after discovering they may contain faulty seat belt chimes meant to warn drivers and front passengers if they are not buckled up.

The recall affects model year 2021-2022 Tesla Model S sedans and Model X SUVs, model year 2017-2022 Model 3 sedans and model year 2020-2022 Model Y SUVs, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Federal law requires vehicles to have seat belt chimes that produce an audible sound when a vehicle is started up if either the driver or front passenger has not yet buckled their seatbelt.

According to the NHTSA, the problem occurs if a driver ignored the chime in the prior time they used the vehicle.

“This condition is limited to circumstances where the chime was interrupted in the preceding drive cycle and the seat belt was not buckled subsequent to that interruption,” the NHTSA recall document states.

Tesla To Fix Issue With Over-The-Air Software Update

Tesla will fix the issue by sending out an over-the-air software update at some point early this month, the company said.

The company is not aware of any injuries or crashes having occurred as a result of the issue, according to NHTSA documents, which notes that a visual warning is still present.

Earlier this month, Tesla recalled nearly 54,000 of its self-driving vehicles over concerns their “rolling stop feature” would cause them to go straight through all-way stop intersections

Tesla also recalled more than 475,000 of its Model S and Model 3 vehicles last month over safety concerns related to their front hood latches and rear view cameras, respectively.
